Prince George, B.C.- With 400 forest fires burning in the province of B.C., the fire fighting budget has been topped.

$52 million dollars had been budgeted for the fire fighting season this year in the province, and that has been surpassed by about one million dollars with the season far from over.

As has been the case  in the past, the Ministry of Forests and Range has statutory authority to spend whatever is necessary to fight the fires.

Last year, the budgeted amount was $62 million and the actual expenditures came in closer to $400 million.

There is more proof that governments at all levels are screwing up! But lets all sit back and do nothing as usual. 62 million budget and 400 million spent. What do they do the next year? Lower it. OMG! Heads need to roll! Oh but what am I thinking? They wont!
It is just a three card montee game. They under budget it, thus they come in overbudget, than they can say they could not balance the annual budget because they spent it on fire fighting. Thus everyone will feel compasionate about it, and it deflects the heat on the government.

Sounds like a rational excuse for the reasoning. HOWEVER, totally stupid and unacceptable of the government to do that.

Order of magnitude, lets cut down the education and health budget by the same percentage amount and see what the ministers in those portfolios would do.

To me, what it shows is the lack of respect for one of the income streams in this province and, of course, the traditional income stream.

Total and utter stupidity!!!!!

I would like to have the minister explain the rationale for that in public.

If they were going to set the number more realistically, then they would have a good argument for doing some sanitization of the forests and forest floors to reduce the amount spent on fires. This way it is just an insurance scheme, not a forest management scheme.
its not about it being smart or stupid. Its about playing the public around. There are some accountability of the forest minister too accept the budget of $62 million, but that is the battle between Bell and Hansen.

In the grand scheme of things, the government is not going to stop fighting the fire because the budget ran out. Thus the general public is not left in harm. The budget is just set up for a rainy year, not a scorcher. Thus the money can be allocated to health and education instead of it being stuck in fire budget.

Thus, Bell gave the fire budget to keep the schools and hospital functioning with assurance that the money will show up when required to fight the fire. Not a penny more.
Think it is time to fire some of these boneheads...
Seems to me it wasn't all that long ago the governemnt was threatening to fire the whole School board in , I think it was Vancouver, for not meeting budget numbers...and now it seems as long as you are Liberal you can do whatever you like...money doesn't seem to be an option to them...
