Prince George, B.C.- Hundreds of people lined Victoria Street and 4th Avenue this morning to show their support for the City’s bid to host the 2015 Canada Winter Games.
Wearing toques, mitts, scarves, some carrying skis, snowshoes, skates,  hockey sticks, or a snow shovel, they had one message “We Are Winter”.

At right, l-r Mason Whiting, Elis Hanks, Hunter Whiting and Hudson Whiting all in winter gear and carrying the Prince George bid theme “We Are Winter”.

While there was plenty of flag waving and cheering, an impromptu game of road hockey started.

“I think this will be huge for the City of Prince George” said Carol Laursen “The Games will give Prince George lots of media coverage and lots of revenue.”   The Games are expected to give the City an economic boost of between $70 and $90 million dollars.

The Bid Evaluation Committee is in Prince George today to assess the venues and go over the details of the proposal. In competition with the cities of Kelowna and Kamloops, Prince George has held the details of its plan for the two week event very close to the vest.

The Committee was taken by bus to various venues in the community this morning, and will be visiting more this afternoon before heading to Kamloops and Kelowna to go over their details.

“Prince George should get the Games” says Hannah Keyes, “We are a winter City, I mean Kamloops doesn’t even get snow”. She along with older sister Rebekah and “ski-dog” Ivory were on 4th Avenue to show their support.

As the police escorted Bid Evaluation Committee bus turned on to 4th Avenue,   horns were honking, people were cheering and waving flags.

Whether the show of support will be enough to win over the Evaluation Committee remains to be seen. The final decision on who will host the games will be made in mid to late September.

GO Prince George!

I call bullchit on this one! Kamloops gets snow. Kamloops has always gotten snow.
"The cost of a typical Winter Canada Games is estimated by the Canada Games
Council to be at 28 million dollars in 2015."

To begin with, that is 1/4 of what the final cost will be, as per the owlypics.

Assuming that they actually are close, lets say it ends up at $30 million to host. Then we get an economic boost of between $70 and $90 million dollars minus the displacement losses mentioned by palopou, and I still don't see the profit.
"Kamloops has always gotten snow."

LOL

Winter (December to February) is snowy and cold, yet days are mainly sunny and sometimes windy. The valley is quite mild with lows of -5 to - 15 degrees (Celsius) and snowfall of about 6 inches,

6 inches over three months!!!! The poor things!!! LOL
"To begin with, that is 1/4 of what the final cost will be"

Just because yu say so????

Go back over the past games information and see how the costs came in and then get back to us.

Without that there is no foundation for your statement. Time you took some responsibility for the credibility of such statements.
I lived in Kamloops and I am telling you that they GET lots of snow! You can stat it up if you want but I will go with experience. We barely got any snow last year ourselves for God sakes. I guess you could say PG gets no snow now to hey?
"Hundreds of people lined Victoria Street and 4th Avenue this morning" they were all kids brought in by who knows. We can't afford the winter games. Do you hear us MR. Rogers, quit spending my money. My taxes went up 10% this year and they are going up another 13% next year.
Don't talk to me, talk to Tourism Kamloops. They are the authors of the information.

I used to walk 20 miles to school every day too. :-)
Not because I say so, because that is what I have observed. I would like to have some actual figures presented.

How much did they estimate the Olympics would cost?
How much did it actually cost? Best figures available would be fine.

As I recall, we were told something in the order of $200 million, tops to host the Olympics, yet last I heard it is over the $billion mark. That is approximately a fourfold increase, therefore my rough estimate is in line with past performance.

How much do they project this event to cost?
What is the expected benefit to PG?
When will my cheque arrive?
How much will my taxes go up after?

Now chill and don't take my words as personal attack. Just niggling questions that I figured "gus" would present the numbers as done in the past.
Time you guys did some work.

1. How much will the games cost? Call one of the Councillors if it is not on the city site.

2. What is the expected benefit to PG? Same method of finding out.

3. When will my cheque arrive? If there is a "legacy" which I understand has always been the case, then it will likely go to some athletic activity in the City. Again, that should be known now (what for, not how much)

4. How much will my taxes go up after? I assume you mean as a direct result. That is a rhetorical question since the reason for taxes going up is generally hard to pinpoint unless it is for something like road maintenance as was the case just recently. There the problem is to find out whether it was used for that. :-)
You realize of course that we are in a bid among three cities and that much of the information in the bid package had to stay away from the public eye so that the other cities did not know what we were planning.

It is kind of a difficult situation to be in.

If we do not get the games, the whole thing is moot. But if we do, I expect these pages to be buzzing again for as much as can be drawn out of this when the key project(s) get announced due to the nature of the capital expenses.
"Hundreds of people"? Well here in PG I guess they speak for everyone else. Too bad pot hole filling isn't a winter sport here.
"Hundreds of people"? Well here in PG I guess they speak for everyone else.

as opposed to the same 8 or so whiners on o250 that are pretty convinced that they speak for everyone in PG... :-D
"as opposed to the same 8 or so whiners on o250 that are pretty convinced that they speak for everyone in PG... :-D"

LOL, good one interceptor!
I know the solution.
It is really very simple. Let us never do anything.
No concerts, no fireworks, no parades, no building, no trail improvement, no sports events, no facilities of any kind.
And guess what, the regular serial complainers will eventually gripe about that.
Who cares what it costs. The city is going to go broke anyway and I would rather they piss the money away on this then studies and other worthless crap like buying land downtown.
Winter Games?????

Some of the so called sports that will take place.

1. Archery
2. Artistic Gymnastics
3. Badmington
4. Boxing
5. Fencing
6. Judo
7. Ringette
8. Squash
9. Sychronized swimming
10. Table Tennis
11. Wheelchair Basketball.

Actual winter sports

1. Alpine Ski
2. Biatholon
3. Cross Country Ski
4. Curling
5. Figure Skating
6. Freestyle ski
7. Ice Hockey
8. Long Track speed skating
9. Short Track speed skating
10.Snowboarding.

I think that when they talk about Winter Games, they are talking about playing games in winter, as opposed to actually playing winter games only.

So its not all about snow.
Yes, they are exactly that, playing games in the winter. they are not mini Olympics or mini world cups or anything of that sort.

It is all about linking people in Canada together through "friendly" sport activities. Community, volunteerism, etc. all play a big part. I think that came through in the judges' public comments.
Ouch!! It wasn't whining. It's called an "observation". There's a difference.
