Prince George, B.C.- It is going to be another hot weekend, and some of the wildfires in the region have increased in activity.
In the Prince George Fire Centre, there is a new fire, it is at the west end of Finger Lake, about 50 km sw of Vanderhoof. Although it is 100 % contained, there is an evacuation alert in place.
South of Prince George, in the Cariboo Fire Centre, the Pelican Lake Fire complex has grown. Now estimated to be 19,000.0 hectares, these fires have grown over the past 24 hours. Fire C10205 and C10209 (both approximately 7km NE of Pelican Lake) have now joined by a very narrow band. The fire is 17,000 hectares in size. Fire C10299 (3km SE of Batnuni Lake) is now 200 hectares. Increased fire behavior was observed on these fires yesterday and there is potential for extreme fire behaviour today. Smoke will continue to be an issue today and throughout the weekend.
This is an interface fire and an evacuation order is in effect. For more information on evacuations, please contact the Cariboo Regional District at 250-392-4283.
The Meldrum Creek Complex of fires is now mapped at 35,691 hectares, or 356.9 square kilometres. This change in size is a result of more accurate mapping. There was an increase in fire activity yesterday as crews responded to flare-ups. Crews are expecting the same conditions today with elevated winds.
