Red dots  show locations of possible new round abouts

Prince George, B.C.- There just may be two more “round-abouts” in the future for the City of Prince George.

The Downtown Partnership (formerly the Mayor’s Task Force for a Better Downtown) has taken a look at some information on the possibility of turning Fourth and Second Avenue’s into two way streets.

The report to the Partnership indicates it is possible to make 2nd a two way with a round about at 3rd and Vancouver. Fourth Avenue would require a round-about at  5th and Cassiar.

The changes would also require some signal light modifications as two way lights would need to be installed at Victoria and 2nd and Victoria and 4th

Transportation Manager Glen Stanker says the early estimate ( which is really just a ball park figure) is that this would cost about $1.6 million dollars as he says it is not the kind of project that can be done in stages “You have to have a balance in traffic flow, so just doing one without the other would create imbalance.” Stanker says  round-abouts are a great way to handle traffic “The delays are less than in a regular intersection, there are fewer collisions, and when there are collisions the severity is reduced. The round about is a superior way to handle traffic flow and I hope we see more of them in the future.”

The report will now be forwarded to City Council for review and possible approval.

There are two other round-abouts in Prince George. One on private property at the Treasure Cove Casino, the other at the north end of the Cameron Street bridge.

So are our one way street systems broken?

I do not find they are.

If the system is not broken, then why fix it?We love spending money on useless things, don't we?
I agree Gus...I think there are other areas were round abouts would be beneficial
When the one-way streets can't handle the traffic anymore would be the correct time to look at alternatives.

The Bypass is a better candidate! It is almost impossible to encounter one green traffic signal when using the Bypass. Usually the light turns red at virtually every intersection as soon as one gets there, going at the proper speed.

Fifth, Tenth, Fifteenth and the big one at 97/16 are all intersections where untold hundreds of thousands of gallons of fuel are wasted annually by idling vehicles!

What about the green carbon reduction efforts touted by Vioctoria and Ottawa?

Here is a project which the City should put the highest priority on! Reduce emissions, get carbon credits, join in with the provs and the feds!

Start leaning on the provincial government to get this done asap!

Harper still has 500 million bucks in unclaimed infrastructure grants waiting to be put to use, according to the news.

We use the new round-about and I find that people do not know how to enter and use them. I find that cars and small trucks tend to STOP! before entering it.
More of them and in the downtown area too is NOT GOING TO WORK!!!!
The round a bout at the North end of the Cameron St., Bridge works relatively well because I suspect it has only 50% of the traffic that the City predicted would use the new bridge.

The City stated that the new bridge wuld handle 8000 vehicles per day and grow to 14000 vehicles per day by 2015/2020.

I suspect that they are running around 6000 per day if they are lucky, and I doubt if we will ever see anything like 14000 per day.

The high numbers were quoted when they were getting the money etc; for the bridge. Now that it is built, you wont hear any talk about the usage.

Whats new??

Have a nice day.
Pal, I have told you a thousand times that at no time ever did 6000 vehicles cross the Cameron Street bridge. An engineering firm did a traffic counts back in 2004 and the count then was 3500 light vehicles and 104 heavy trucks per day. And at the time our illustrious mayor was telling us then that 8000 vehicles crossed the bridge daily. The figures I give were taken from the Cities own website.

I used the roundabout for the first time yesterday and I hope if they build more that they will be bigger and the curbing more defined. I went right over the brick work before I realized that I had screwed up . Lucky there wasn’t another vehicle in sight. Its so small I suspect the it was designed so that the chip trucks could drag their trailers over the curb. But then every project that the City is involved in is a screw up. What else is new.
Cheers
Check out the address below.

It shows a 24 hour count that was conducted in October 2009. Over 10,000 vehicle in that 24 hour period.

Retired, If you drove over the brick work, you did not screw up at all. It's called a "low profile apron" and it's made for exactly what you said. Long trailers, but if you happen to drive up on it a bit, big deal. 99% of roundabouts have them. I use the roundabout multiple times a day and can't find where the design screw up you're talking about is. The base in a portion of the apron failing and should be fixed though.
dudeinpg, checked the web site you gave but cant find a traffic count. A Traffic count in 2009 would be after the fact when the new bridge was in place

And how would you do a traffic count over a 24 hour period? The traffic count I am refering too was done by a live body that was employed by UKMA Engineering. It,was done to determine if the new bridge was needed and not to back up the BS we were being given at the time.
Cheers
Lights at Winnipeg and third would be nice.

The last one was wrong, sorry. It's just PG Map with the intersection count option turned on. THe sheet says the 24 hour count was automated.
Probably a camera with counting software.
Did you mean UMA Engineering?

If roundabouts are created, how about repaving every approach to it up to five miles away? Work that into the budget.
Will Highway 97 at 16 be part of our new "hydrogen highway"? Sure hope so.
The existing roudabout is fine, but it is very frustrating to me that more than half the times I use it I have to stop behind people that do not understand the concept.
And to many of these unsure drivers: whats with the signal light? Most of us probably know that you are going to be turning right to leave the roundabout, or maybe some folks just drive around, and around, and around, not sure where to get off perhaps?
