No Relief For Cariboo Fire Centre
By 250 News
There is no relief in site for the Cariboo Fire Centre as the change in weather forecast for the next few days, bringing the potential for lightning with no associated moisture.
This weather is going to challenge operations and increase fire behaviour on existing fires.
All active fires in the Cariboo Fire Centre continue to generate increased levels of smoke, affecting air quality.
Meldrum Complex
South of Meldrum Creek fires cover a combined area of over 40,000 hectares, or 400 square kilometres. This fire has not crossed the Fraser river, or Highway 20. Crews are anticipating a continuation of smoke and extreme fire activity on fire 191 (Northwest of Twan Creek). Crews were able to conduct burnoff operations on the southeast corner of fire 189 yesterday and will continue today if conditions allow. These operations have increased the effectiveness of current fire guards by removing unburned fuels between fire guards and secure the fire perimeters. These burnoff operations will cause visible smoke columns.
Bull Complex
There are four fires within this complex totalling over 29,000 hectares. Active fire behaviour occurred yesterday and there was some growth on the fires. Crews are continuing to action hot spots along the perimeter of fire 183 (4km east of Alexis Creek). Smoke will continue to be an issue.
Place Complex
There has been no significant fire growth in the Dog Creek Complex, 40 kilometres west of 100 Mile. The fire still remains at 7,304 hectares in size and is 85 per cent contained.
Pelican Complex
The two main fires within this complex total over 21,108 hectares. Yesterday crews had a very challenging day with the Pelican fires and are anticipating the same activity for today. Smoke will continue to be an issue this evening. The public should also be aware of the possibility of reduced visibility due to smoke conditions in addition to hazardous trees that may have fallen down along the road. Everyone is asked to use caution while traveling in the vicinity of the Pelican Complex.
Tweedsmuir Park
A fire has been burning inside Tweedsmuir Park along the eastern border. Initial Attack action is being taken on the fire that is 1300 hectares in size. Last night, the fire crossed the Hwy 20. As a result, Hwy 20 is closed at Heckman Pass.
