The entire 33 member Official Opposition has converged on the city
The New Democrat team took in our local team this evening, watching the Prince George Cougars claw their way back from a 3-0 deficit, to settle for a 3-2 loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings at the CN Centre.
NDP Leader Carole James says her team made a commitment to reach out to all parts of B.C. during the election and all 33 M.L.A.s are in Prince George for the first caucus meeting outside the Lower Mainland.
James says the critics have been meeting with groups and organizations in their specific critic-areas -- with officials from Tourism Prince George, arts and culture organizations, business groups, people in forest, in education, and labour.
The caucus also hosted a reception this evening for local elected officials -- city councillors, school board trustees, for those with the health region and first nations leaders.
"We're hearing a number of things, certainly people feel positive about the fact that they are benefitting from the oil and gas revenue and the economic development that's occurring in the north and the interior," says James. But she says the NDP caucus is also hearing about infrastructure concerns and concerns over a social issues.
"The thing that people are looking for, really, is long-term sustainable growth, so that they don't see the kind of boom and bust that has occurred before in this part of the province."
James says her party will continue to push the Liberal government to create a long-term economic development fund for the region out of the increase in the annual allowable cut caused by the pine beetle. She says that money should not go into general revenues, but should be targeted to diversifying the economies in the regions affected.
The NDP leader will speak to a Prince George Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Friday.
