Prince George, B.C.- Prince George is preparing for a special  sitting of the BC Court of Appeal.
On September 14th, the BC Court of Appeal will sit in Prince George at 4:00 p.m. at the Courthouse, as part of the   Court of Appeal’s 100th Anniversary celebrations. It is not yet known how many of the Court’s 23 Justices will be here for the special sitting, but it is confirmed that Attorney General Mike De Jong will be here.

Special Sittings are open to the public as space permits, invited guests of the Court, and all members of the legal profession.

By holding these Special Sittings, the Court hopes to provide opportunities to make the Court better known to all British Columbians.  This is an important element of the Centenary celebrations, because the Court of Appeal is the highest Court in the province and has jurisdiction over the entire province.  The Court serves, and is accountable to, all residents of British Columbia.

There has only been one previous sitting of the BC Court of Appeal in Prince George.

The existence of the BC Court of Appeal originates in the Court of Appeal Act, 1907, which came into force in late 1909.  The first sitting of the Court took place in Victoria on 4 January 1910.

There are four special  projects underway to  mark the Court’s anniversary:
  • A film entitled “Though the Heavens Fall: 100 Years of the BC Court of Appeal”. The film is being aired on Knowledge Network throughout 2010 and will be available through Justice Education Society for use at schools or other public screenings.
  • A book by Christopher Moore entitled “The British Columbia Court of Appeal: The First Hundred Years”, which offers an account of the institutional history of the Court.
  • A special edition of BC Studies, published by the University of British Columbia, in which several aspects of the Court’s jurisprudence over the last 100 years have been canvassed by leading academics from both the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria.
  • An issue of The Advocate, published by the Vancouver Bar Association,  that will include a number of articles on some of the century’s leading counsel, whose names remain with us today in many Vancouver law firms.
Two Special Sittings have already taken place this year, one  in Vancouver and  one in Victoria. There is a Special Sitting  scheduled for Kamloops in mid October and in  Kelowna in early November.

Oh god, could it get more exciting?
Well, like it or not our legal system is the only real divide between so-called democracies like Kenya and Russia from Canada. It might not be perfect, but its still one of the best in the world. So, yeah! Damn right its cool.
Must be some hunters or fishers looking for a road trip. They may as well stay in Vancouver....."The court serves, and is accountable, to all the residents of British Columbia" Written by the lawyers for the lawyers. They are the reason why the CHARTER of rights has become an acronym for Canadian History About Ridiculous Trials, Evidence and Rulings !
