Prince George, B.C.- This week marks a special milestone for one of the oldest buildings in Prince George. The South Fort George School House is 100 years old!.

The school opened in September of 1910 and was intended to be a temporary school. Originally located at 4th and Thapage at the edge of what was then downtown South Fort George, it was moved to Fort George Park in 1976 as a gift from the Weatherly family.

Unlike many other one room school houses, this one had desks while others had a long table around the walls with a bench for students.

According to Exploration Place, the original class had 18 students:
  •  Alex Bird
  •  Eliza Bird
  •  Harriet Duncan
  •  Patrick Pierrot
  •  Sally Pierrot
  •  Minnie Seymour
  •  Aggie Seymour
  •  Mary Halm
  •  Edith Senior
  •  Frank Bird
  •  Clarence Burns
  •  Evelyn Edwards
  •  Albert Pierrot
  •  William Seymour
  •  Sarah Seymour
  •  Sophie Seymour
  •  Phillip Halm
  •  Gladys Senior

The first teacher was a Mr. Cosgrove a Princeton graduate who volunteered to teach until a replacement could be found. Miss L. Brady replaced Cosgrove and lasted a month before qualified teacher, Mrs A.B. Campbell took charge.

Exploration Place will hold a birthday party for the school house this afternoon with childen in the Fort George Explorers after school care program.
