Prince George, B.C. - It was a relatively quiet morning for those hosting booths at the 'Active Living' Market in Pine Centre Mall...maybe, as people chose to sleep in just a little extra after the first week of school.

But, by just after lunch, the pace was starting to pick up considerably, as city residents had a chance to stop by, pose questions, and register for classes and lessons being offered up by local non-profit groups this fall.

Some of the busier booths included minor basketball, Scouts Canada, Girl Guides (as shown in photo at left) and the local figure skating clubs.

There is definitely 'something for everyone':  women's rec hockey, art and sewing classes, information on the new resort at the former Log House restaurant, and a booth outlining plans by a local group to open a rock climbing wall in the not-to-distant future.

The Prince George Genealogical Society has been around in the city since 1979 and is hoping to drum up some new interest over the course of this weekend's market.

One of the original members, Thelma Werschke, was on-hand this afternoon (shown on left with Irene Rigler at right) to talk to anyone interested in finding out more about their family history.

Werschke's interest lies particularly in the importance of medical histories...

After noticing a family history of diabetes, Werschke convinced her doctor to test her for the disease and caught it very early on, meaning she is able to manage her condition without insulin.

The local society is hosting a seminar later this month, featuring a certified Genealogical Researcher from Saskatchewan.  Anyone wanting more information about the September 25th event can contact society President Maureen McGee at 250-562-4876 or email tacy@telus.net
