Prince George, B.C.- Solicitor General Mike de Jong is in Prince George to tour of the new 20 cell women’s unit at the Prince George Correctional Centre.
The budget for the new unit was $11.5 million dollars, which is in addition to the nearly $4 million in upgrades to  PGRCC’s video, back up power and a reconfiguration of the jail’s common areas.
The new women’s unit was supposed to be ready by the end of last year, but the Ministry cited delays in site preparation and foundation work on winter conditions, and later said there were further delays so the   upgrades to the main section of PGRCC would coincide with construction of the new women’s unit.
With the new unit complete, the old section that was used to house women will be reverted to program and cell space for men.

Lets do the math. 4 million plus 11.5 million divided by 20 equals???? Wow! Better be some pretty nice digs for that tax payer money.
A charming example of a building designed by a committee.
That jail seems to be quite a money hole to me.
Exactly what makes HARPER happy. More jail space even though crime is down. Something is going down for him to want to increase jails and the big question is, who exactly is he planning on putting there? Protestors? Pot smokers? People who voice their opinions? Who?
LOL, oh Municca, you silly socialist.
Look at how many new jails are being built in the USA over the last decade.

Begin with a look at Alex Jones website. Alex is a little over the top excited, but his research is extensive and his sources confirmable.

Be afraid, very afraid.

Oh, and have a nice day to.
More like silly realist. LOL Ty Loki, that is one of the sources I have read along with many others.
Beleive or not but they did need a womens jail there. I agree with ya Municca who will be put there? Yes crime is down. It's because the jerk offs that made this city 4th in the nation as dangerous are sitting in a cage up there.

That's not real at all. You are dillusional. Why would anyone worry about new prison space unless they were a criminal? We need to start locking people up longer, and new prison space will allow this. No more revolving door justice.
It's called a jail but really given the history of our justice system here you can relax and just call it a "drop-in centre" fer criminals. Read the papers, folks. Especially here. Sentence? One day in jail and probation. One week in jail and a promise to abide by a court order. I could go on, but you get the message. Don't ya?
If the facility is designed to last let us say fifty years and the construction cost is spread over that many years it is not such a large expense.

It's too bad but when one breaks the law one has to be kept out of society for rehabilitation and to protect the rest of society.

Canadians are generally appalled at the light sentences (or no sentences at all!) and have been demanding a tougher approach. That means more jails.

If we can afford to pay hundreds of millions for schools, highways and other amenities in Afghanistan we can certainly afford to spend money on some of our own urgent requirements as well.
According to the linked site, Canada has 107 people in jails per 100,000 population.

The USA tops the list with 738/100,000

China has 118/100.000

http://www.allcountries.org/ranks/prison_incarceration_rates_of_countries_2007.html

USA murder rate is 5.6/100,000
Canada 1.9/100,000
China 2.1/100,000

Does not look to me as if putting as many people in jail as the USA does would improve anything in Canada other than increase taxes for all of us and employment for the civil service.

The thing that some people seem not to get is that we are a more civil nation. It shows in the results. Something to be very proud of.
Does anyone know why the jail is located in such a prominent location? I mean, it is a relatively good looking building, but I can think of better locations for a jail than the drive from the airport to downtown.
All the guards and probation officers would live up there.
It's open, finally?
You heard 'em boys n girls in blue.
FILLERUP!
Gus,the jail is situated on that site,so people arriving in town who know that the forest industry is in the shitter, they will realize what BC's Northern Capital primary industry has become.
