Prince George, B.C. -  The North Cariboo SPCA hit its fundraising goal of $35-thousand dollars at this year's "Paws For A Cause" walk in Cottonwood Island Park.

The event's MC, and a director on the SPCA's provincial board, Kathi Travers, says "Today is a perfect example of what people in this city will do for an important cause."

She says, "They did not let the rain dampen their enthusiasm because they understand the importance of what the shelter does."  All the money raised during today's walk will help out the local shelter.

Katie was the biggest canine contributor to the cause -- raising $1000.00.  And, yes, she raised most of it herself...

Owner Cheryl Giannisis explains, "We go for walks several times a week and I have a bad back and I thought, 'Well, why am I going into the ditches to pick up cans and bottles?'.  So I taught her and she picked it up so quickly because she loves to retrieve."

Now, the six-year-old mixed breed, herself a rescue dog, did have some help -- a few human friends donated to her cause -- but this is not Katie's first fundraising effort.

Giannisis says her pet donated $400.00 to a neighbour who lost both her legs to diabetes and needed a ramp built outside her home.  And Katie made her first donation of the year to the local SPCA back in May when her bottle collecting raised $640.00.
