Burns Lake, B.C. – Dinner and a movie could once again be a reality for Burns Lake residents.

The Lakes District Film Society has purchased the vacant Beacon Theatre in the village and hopes to open up what would be Canada’s second community-owned move theatre in November.

Lakes District Film Society President Michael Riis-Christianson says the 59-year-old theatre which closed four years ago is still in good condition for its age.

“Gordon Douglas of Home Pro Central Interior completed a building inspection for us free of charge, and reported that it is structurally sound. We’ve got some issues to address, but nothing that will prevent us from opening.”

The film society was formed in October, 2009 and has been raising money to buy the building and get it back in operation. There are currently about 50 members and enough money to make essential repairs and cover initial operating expenses. But Riis-Christianson says there’s plenty more to be done before the box office opens.

“We have so much to do – everything from fixing up the building to training volunteers and hiring employees. At times the task seems Herculean, but fortunately, we have a very dedicated executive.

A contingent will be heading to Salmon Arm in October to get training from Canada’s only community-owned theatre. Riis-Christianson says the group is also hoping for some guidance from the Roi Theatre in Smithers and the Grande Rio in Vanderhoof.

Riis-Christianson says he hopes Lakes District residents will support the theatre when it opens later this year.
