Prince George, B.C.- The numbers still have to be detailed, but Mayor Dan Rogers says the major capital investment   for the 2015 Winter Games will see a major retro-fit for the Kin I arena. The Mayor says it will require about $12 million in capital investment, but it will be a legacy for the community.

Speaking on the Meisner program this morning on CFIS, the Mayor says the initial idea is to  expand Kin I and make it a showcase of wood, upgrade the dressing rooms and improve the lounge upstairs, but he adds, there will be full community engagement before any final decisions are made.

The Federal and Provincial Governments are committed to providing $22 million dollars of the overall estimated $40 million dollars in operational and capital improvements.  The Mayor says there are significant opportunities to raise dollars through corporate donations and  ticket sales “The Canada Winter Games have never lost money, in fact, Grande Prairie had a million dollars left over. The economic impact is also a huge benefit with that impact estimated to be between $70 and $90 million.”

Prince George was announced Friday as the winning City to host the 2015 Winter Games beating fellow finalist communities of Kelowna and Kamloops.

Better build it soon. There is a sale on wood.
This is the fellow who knows all about wood roof structures for ice arenas. We could have had him design CN Centre, but he was not the low bidder and those were the days when there were no "wood first" policies in place. We thought wood meant that 2 x stuff we were sending to the USA, not the stuff we used to build the old Safeway buildings and City Hall Council chamber with. :-)

Seasons come and seasons go. This one too shall pass, just like the last one. :-)
$12,000,000,00... hm how much per year/per household will this be?
Perhaps instead of Kin 1, we can just use the art gallery and the outside rink downtown. This might even help with the downtown (never gonna happen)revitalization project!!!!
Lets see if they fit the performing arts centre in there some where.

The games are paid by several sources. The government funding comes from Feds, Prov, and City. Much of the $12million will likely be from the senior governments rather than the City. That money will come from income and other taxes and will be spread over a 50 fold number of people in the case of the province and a 500 fold number of people in the case of federal money.

I do not know what the proposed split is to be, but if the feds put $6 million in, let us say, and it were all going to come out of personal income tax, then the average family of three would pay about 51 cents on a one time basis.

Lets say the province puts in $3million then the average family in BC would pay an additional $2 on a one time basis.

Then, if the city would put in another $3 million, the average family would put in $120 on a one time basis.

The good news is that if the City was going to pay for the entire cost it would cost the average family $480 on a one time basis instead of $122.51

I am sure that eventually we will no what it will cost the taxpayer in PG, as well as what it would have cost if we did not have the help of the senior governments.

The other good news is that
1. with a refurbished/new facility we will be spared major maintenance costs for the next decade.
2. this is not an additional facility so the operating costs will not increase, in fact they may drop due to improved insulation and materials.

Believe me, if we needed to scrap part of the Kin Centre because we could not afford a new or refurbished one, this is a hell of a deal.

But hey, since we are talking about needs and wants these days, maybe we really do not need those ice surfaces and we could scrap them all to save some money. I am sure there must be an X-box equivalent to a game of hockey with the old boys.
If we don't have a brand new 55 million dollar Performing Arts Center the athletes and visitors may conclude that we are just a bunch of redneck beer swilling hillbilly ignoramuses!

Or they may not notice at all, being to busy doing sports and enjoying all the great watering and eating holes we boast of having here!
