The ice jam that posed a flooding risk to Hixon residends last January
Shoring Up Naver Creek A Costly Propositionat the community hall hosted by the Regional District and Fraser Basin Council late last week.
Two consultants presented a preliminary report that looked into the factors creating last year's local 'State of Emergency' for residents as ice jammed the Naver Creek and threatened to flood the community. They also offered up recommendations aimed at mitigating any future threats -- like stabilizing eroding riverbanks.
Joan Chess, with the Fraser Basin, says if all the recommendations were to be implemented, the tally could run as high as $800-thousand dollars. Chess says, "That's a lot of money and there are a lot of rivers in B.C. vying for funding, so it's a matter of prioritizing."
Chess says there are a couple of high priority recommendations because of homes at risk. She says there's one case where there's an older home, with a newer home nearby, high up on a bank that is definitely seeing the effects of erosion.
Chess says comments raised by those at the meeting will be factored in to the final ranking of the recommendations. The report will go back to community residents for final review in about one month and then the consultants will begin searching for funding.
But she points out there are some projects that may be taken on by the community. UNBC is offering a bio-engineering course in late April -- a process that involves laying down rock and re-establishing vegetation to shore up riverbanks -- and Chess says several Hixon residents have expressed an interest in taking the course.
