School District's Financial Challenges Not Over

Prince George, B.C.- School District 57 is starting off the school with an accumulated surplus of $9.3 million, but by the time classes are out next June, $6 million of that surplus will be gone as it will be used for special programs and to offset the funding deficit.
In the financial report presented to the School District 57 Board of Education,  KPMG’s Ron Epp advised that while the District’s capital assets have increased, that is largely because of the newly completed Duchess Park Secondary School.
Epp says the accumulated surplus will be reduced to $3.084 million next year,  then reduced to $2.73 million the following year and will be depleted the year after that to pay off funding shortfalls. Chair Lynn Hall says it is discouraging to have to face the same financial situation over and over again “Yer after year we are faced with the same process, but this (audit) puts our position in perspective. While we would always like more money….well….time will tell.”
The Board of Education is meeting with Minister of Education Margaret MacDiarmid on Monday  when she visits Prince George.
