Prince George B.C.- The delegates to the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention have told the Provincial Government they don’t want to extend the term of elections.
In one of the most hotly debated issues put before the delegates, the idea of extending the term for Mayor’s and Council to 4 years up from the current 3 years has been defeated.
The vote had 280 votes in favour of the extended term, and 355 votes against.
This morning’s ballot was the second vote on the resolution arising from the Provincial government’s task force on local government which recommended the longer term.
The UBCM's resolutions committee had recommended supporting an extension to the terms. But those who oppose it say the extended term is too long for people with businesses to make a commitment to the elected posts and the salaries too low to survive on without another income.
The resolution had been voted on yesterday and was narrowly defeated (268 – 244) but the tally was challenged and the Chair called for a paper ballot to be held this morning.

Good.
Yes, that is good!
This is great!

The argument of being able to get more work done was totally ridiculous. If that were true, then go for 6 or 8 years.

You got three years. Take on the work that was decided to be done by the previous Council, add the new work with the time available in mind, and make sure that the projects that are longer term will withstand the test of a new Council bent on upsetting the apple cart just because they want to show everyone who is king for the day.

My message is get along not only with the Councillors you sit with, but also the projects that are bridging from one era to another at the end of your term so that the work you did is not for nothing.
So let's put it to rest and don't bring it up at a future date PLEASE. Usually, in situations like this, city Council will keep pressing on until they get their wish. I say we don't let them do that any more.
