Prince George residents will have an opportunity to discuss a proposed Second-Hand Dealers & Pawnbrokers Bylaw at an open house hosted by the City of Prince George this evening.

If passed, the bylaw would require the operators of pawn and second-hand shops to keep an electronic record of all items received, along with the identity of the person who brought the goods in.

A similar program in Kelowna has resulted in the recovery of more than $100-thousand dollars worth of stolen goods in its first year of operation.

Prince George City Council approved the draft bylaw back in November (click here, for further details).

Between 7pm and 9pm this evening, City staff will outline the proposed regulations and answer any questions in the 2nd floor Conference Room at City Hall.  All business owners involved in the buying and selling of second-hand goods are invited to attend, as are members of the general public.

There will also be a demonstration of the computer software program necessary to establish the tracking system of second-hand goods.

This is a good idea. I wished it was in effect several years ago when I had a camera snd telephoto lens stolen. I strongly suspect it went there, but the police told me they could do nothing to check. If stolen property is recovered from these places, do the owners get charged and go to prison?
