Education Minister, Shirley Bond, making today's announcement

B.C.'s Education Minister chose a third grade classroom at Ron Brent Elementary to announce $5-million dollars in funding to support innovative literacy programs.

Shirley Bond points out this is a continuing commitment to programs that started last year.  School District 57's share amounts to $161-thousand dollars and will be used to include another inner-city school in the "Primary Project" -- a program launched with the first grant last year that helped reduce class size and offered teachers more support and training.

"These grants are aimed at areas of greatest need in our district -- primary grades and inner-city schools.  We are finding new ways to teach students who may learn a different way, " says District 57 Superintendent Dick Chambers.

For her part, the Education Minister says the new funding fulfills a campaign commitment and will help achieve the government's goal of making B.C. the best-educated, most literate jurisdiction on the continent.

The announcement caps off Family Literacy Week.
