Terrace, B.C.- A Northern B.C. First Nation is urging BC Hydro to restore power to its communities as soon as possible.
Nisga’a Nation Mitchell Stevens says nearly 800 of his people have been without electricity since a powerful storm swept through the region Saturday night. Stevens says the utility should make restoration of power to the Nass Valley a much higher priority.
“Approximately 775 Nisga'a customers remain without power and despite the extraordinary magnitude of damage there is little BC Hydro visible presence in the area", said President Stevens.
The Nisga’a Lisims Government says many residents rely heavily on the storage of frozen food for basic subsistence during the winter months. It says the delays to restoring power are putting food stores in jeopardy and many residents are becoming anxious about the situation.
BC Hydro said earlier today that it has three crews working in the Nass Valley to restore power in the region and that it is a priority for the utility.
According to its website, electricity may not be back on for Nisga’a villages until Wednesday afternoon.
At its peak, the wind storm that swept through the region left over 25, 000 people without power.
Hydro says there are currently about 1100 customers still in the dark.
