Gang Activity Makes P.G. Most Dangerous City in Canada

Prince George, B.C. – Don’t be shocked when you see the Macleans magazine cover that proclaims Prince George as the most dangerous city in the country.
The annual crime stats ranking is based on 2009 crime numbers, and P.G. may be at the overall top of the heap, but Victoria, Kelowna, Surrey and Chilliwack are in the top ten too.
The magazine points to gang activity as being the reason why Prince George is at the top of their list. The Mayor and RCMP say they are tackling this issue head on, and the upcoming gang summit will be a key to bringing together a variety of agencies to battle the problem. (see previous story)
The annual rankings examine stats for 5 categories, here are the categories, the national mark, and the communities with the worst record in each category:
Homicide:
The Canadian average is 1.8 homicides per 100 thousand people. Abbotsford is the worst in the country with a homicide rate 3 times the national average
Sexual Assaults:
The Canadian rate is 62 per 100 thousand of population. Cornwall Ontario has the highest rate in this category with a rate that is 154% of the National mark.
Motor Vehicle Theft:
The Canadian rate is 321 per 100 thousand population, Ft McMurray has a vehicle theft rate that is 209% of the national mark.
Robbery:
The national mark is 96 per 100 thousand population, but in Winnipeg, the rate is 249% of the national mark.
Break and Enters:
National mark is 610 per 100 thousand population, Chilliwack is 104% of that mark.
This is the only category in which Prince George even makes the top five, being listed at 67% over the national mark.
