Citizen of the Year, Sharon Hurd, with PGCF President Jim Imrich
Prince George, B.C. - Her first quiet words were, "I think I'm going to faint"...
From that point on, the winner of the 2010 Prince George Citizen of the Year award, Sharon Hurd, gave a hilarious acceptance speech.
The 71-year-old moved to Prince George back in 1995 and went to UNBC to take Women's Studies. Since then, she has devoted countless hours to several local organizations, mainly devoted to helping women. She is the Executive Director of the Phoenix House, a board member of the Hutda Lake Wellness Project for Women with Addictions, the director of the John Howard Society of Northern B.C., and the board chair of both the P.G. Council of Seniors and the P.G. Crisis Line.
Speaking at last night's Awards Banquet hosted by the Prince George Community Foundation, Hurd said she hadn't prepared anything to say because the other nominees have done such wonderful things in the community, she hadn't expected to win. (Those nominees were Dr. Theresa Healy, Ruth Langner, and Shawn Rice)
Hurd said, "I do what I love." She said she likes using her life experiences to help women. And went on to say, to much laughter, "And I like helping men, too. I like men...I just can't be married to them."
She added, "I'm very good friends with my last husband -- I've had a few -- it's part of my research. I have to tell the young women what not to do, by doing it!"
"But really and truly, I am so honoured to be here. It was so unexpected for me," she said. "I got dolled up just to be supportive of everyone else."
