Basi and Virk- No Surprise

By Ben Meisner

Tuesday, October 19, 2010 03:45 AM

A raid on the Legislature, comments that the raid involved organized crime, had connections to the Premier's office. It was a made in Hollywood movie, but then the balloon burst, and it was all over just as quickly as it started.
Basi and Virk pleading guilty under a deal with the Crown for 2 years less a day house arrest. Both men broken mentally and financially. It was the end of seven years of trying to find out exactly what did happen in the BC Rail sale, but now never to happen.
It is easy to see why the pair took the fall.  Reduced to driving a limo in the evening in Vancouver, one man had watched his daughter grow into a teen with the matter hanging over his head.
In this camp there was never any doubt, the trial would not go ahead and while it did, its short life should indicate, that 10 million dollars in court time and legal fees, constant delays and the prospect that it would take yet another year, got everyone in the mood to deal.
We in the province must now be content to sit back and watch what has happened since the railway was sold and the jury will always be out on that one.
I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

Guess this is just another example of the stink of corruption emanating from Liberal headquarters. Ten million tax dollars later and we're no closer to the real story concerning the BC Rail sale? I almost feel sorry for Basi and Virk, the fall guys, who sacrificed a lot so that the real achitects could walk away clean.
Am I surprised? No, but I certainly am disgusted!
fall guys, more like well paid patsies.
The smell of corruption from the highest offices in our province sickening what has happened
recall the leg!!! NOW start giving the people of bc some answers now that its not "before the courts"
Elect a new government. Carole James may not have charisma, but she is honest. She has promised a public inquiry.
Yes Carole James is honest, but I'm not sure she is the right person to be the leader.
A public inquiry? hmmm just another waste of taxpayers money. I won't change anything!
Sure Carole James is eminently capable of being the Premier of BC. She has shown her competence by having a major effect on thye NDP's popularity over the last several years, bringing it from two MLas after 2001 to thye current position of only 2% votes from forming government. Her competence is proven. Its true she doesn't rip peoples throats out (metaphorically), but people have said for years that a new kind of politics is needed in BC. She is it.

I believe there should be a public inquiry, preferably headed by a judge with the authority to have criminal charges laid. There are a lot of unanswered questions, and the must be answered. What was the role of senior politicians in this affair? Who authorised the bribes to be paid and why were they not charged with bribing a public official? Such an inquiry would change at least one thing: the public's knowledge of the events. money well spent in my book, after all, what price can be put on democracy?
This is a drag like the Air India trials and endless inquiries. After decades of spending a hundred million bucks or more the actual perpetrators walked away with only one accused serving some time for building a bomb - he claimed he had no idea what it was for.

Now finally two officials pleaded guilty and if they were NOT guilty they should not have fooled us and all of B.C. by claiming that they were guilty and hours later appear on TV claiming that they were completely innocent. Why would anyone give them any credibility?

Perhaps we need an inquiry into why with all the efforts of the RCMP and the justice/legal system many of these high profile trials end up with the general population in disbelief at the outcome?

Air India, Picton...it has been happening a lot.

But, go ahead, hold an inquiry! It's only money! It's not my money, so let it roll!

Hopefully the verdict of the inquiry will be more believable! And if it isn't we can always ask for an inquiry into the latest inquiry.

We are in trouble and the trouble is not only confined to B.C. but it is to be found in every jurisdiction, including the federal - I did not believe for one minute that the very expensive inquiry into the Mulroney/Schreiber affair got down to the real nitty-gritty! To mention the word Airbus was apparently verboten!
Carol James is a liberal spy placed in the NDP party to make sure that the Liberals have no opposition.

She's done nothing in her time as the leader of the opposition.

The reason NDP popularity has risen is a direct responce to Liberal un-popularity.

She is the reason the Liberal party was voted in a second time. People would rather this province be run by criminals than by an incompetant leader.

She's alienated business and labour.Who's left to vote?

One more thing. The RCMP must have evidence that these people who pleaded guilty now actually committed breach of thrust. How else could have it come to a trial. A trial without any hard evidence?

And, if there is no evidence (unlikely scenario) then the two who pleaded guilty when they insist that they are innocent should be charged with obstruction of justice because the trial ended when they made their plea!

Over and out.
To coastb: For a political party to become popular it must first exist and also be seen as a viable alternative government. After ther 2001 election that was in doubt for the NDP. Carole James spent years going round the province revitalising the NDP, and it is due in large part to her that voters saw the NDP as an alternative to the Campbellites, so much so that she missed winning the last election by only 2% of the vote. The latest polls, for what its worth, show clearly that the NDP has garnered far more than that needed 2% and would win an election if held now. I believe that Campbell is so damaged that he can never recover, so I expect this situation to hold until ther next election. That may not be too far in the future if recall is effective.

How has she alienated business? For a fact she has not alienated labour, not that "labour" votes as a single block anyway any more than business does.

As for being a spy, I think you need to live in the real world and not be fractured from reality.
There is no doubt that Campbell has damaged himself beyond repair. If the NDP is convinced that James is eminently capable of being the Premier so be it.

One may not question her character but one may remember the dismal record the NDP established for itself in the past which caused its demise to two seats. Like Campbell's problems the NDP's downfall was self-inflicted.

It had ten years of opportunity to prove itself and it refused to change its course
inspite of overwhelming evidence that change was needed.

Chretien: "What you do has consequences."

I find it very interesting that the media could ignore this case for 7 years and now all of a sudden it is news. The Citizen has had very little on this case for years and when it did have it was buried in the back pages. Now that the Libs can say, we are clean, the Citizen all of a sudden has it as a front page story today. The telivision media gave it the same treatment. Shame. It is very evident who is calling the shots with the media. By the way, Black press is not lilly white either. You are better to watch the blogs than the mainline media. At least you get a bit of truth and information. In my mind there is a lot more to this story than what we are being fed. Why else would the media bury it?
I have to agree with coastb, as the liberal piss more and more people off the voters naturally go to the only other viable option. Green will never get elected so if you are pissed at Gordo you vote for the NDP or you don't vote.

I hope and pray that they throw Campbell under a bus and get a new leader before the next election. For me, which ever party has an actual plan to decrease taxes by the most is the one that I am going to vote for. I am tired of seeing so much of my pay going towards programs that I completely disagree with.
"Reduced" to driving Limo? At least it's good honest work.
Carole JAMES?? A Leader???
Of the NDP? For now I guess. Whoa, she's made promises? A politician said they're gonna do something?
All the parties are the same, what do we have, short memories??
I'd love to see a new party, elect them, and in five years we'd be slinging mud their way at their broken promises as well.
Yuh can't win.
Ben you are defeatist. This has nothing to do with the hardships of those that committed treason against our province... this has to do with the integrity of our political process and a crime group (in government) that is running this province... no price is to big to expose that for what it was and is, and bring justice to the sanctity of the political process.

We need a public inquiry at this point into not only the BC Rail deal, but also the entire judicial system in BC. We need answers so this kind of corruption doesn't happen again.

All that happened was Gordon Campbell bought a get out of jail card by covering the admitted criminals legal bills and exerting influence on the judicial system.

Good honest people should be outraged this was allowed to happen.
