Bella Coola, B.C. – Rain has once again forced some Bella Coola Valley families from their homes.
The Central Coast Regional District declared a new local state of emergency today because of heavy rainfall in the area. Environment Canada has declared a heavy rainfall warning for the Central Coast. The warning does not include the Bella Coola Valley itself, but moderate to heavy rainfall has been recorded at weather stations in the area.
Evacuation orders have been issued for all of Grant Road, including all properties east of Thorsen Creek and north of Highway 20; the north end of Nusatsum Road and the east side of Saloompt Road between Highway 20 and the Bella Coola River.
The BC River Forecast Centre has also issued a high streamflow advisory for the tributaries of the Bella Coola River, but not the main stem of the river itself. Officials say minor flooding has been reported on some tributaries located on the southern side of the valley and localized flows over the banks are possible depending on the rainfall.
Just weeks ago the valley was pounded by torrential rain and flooding that washed out roads and bridges, ruined family homes, and cut off Bella Coola to all but helicopter and boat traffic.
The Central Coast Regional District Emergency Operations Centre remains open and available to provide assistance and information from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm by calling 250-982-0062.
