2010 Citizen of The Year, Sharon Hurd, reacts to hearing her name last weekend

Prince George, B.C.-  While not wanting to take the much-deserved spotlight off this year's Citizen of the Year, tireless volunteer, Sharon Hurd...

The Co-Chair of the Nominating Committee, Murry Krause, is hoping people will start thinking of possible names to put forward for next year, as the nomination process is a fairly lengthy one.

The Citizen of the Year is sponsored by the Prince George Community Foundation.  The Nominating Committee is a seperate entity.  Co-Chairs Murry Krause and Michael Kerr 'beat the bush' to find nominees, but leave voting on the eventual winner to the rest of the 7- or 8-member committee.

Krause says, "We've worked really hard over the years to make sure that people feel, and know, and trust that this is a really fair process, that it's not political, that anybody could be eligible for Citizen of the Year -- anybody from any walk of life in our community."

He says, "Our goal is to try and get the nominations to reflect the diversity of volunteer opportunities in the community -- it really is based on volunteerism."

But Krause says the trouble is that it's sometimes difficult to convince those behind-the-scenes hard workers to put their names forward because people who volunteer tend to avoid recognition for their efforts.  "One of the tacts we do use in trying to convince people it would be worth their while, is we tell them this would be an opportunity to let the community know the things that are really important to them, so they get recognition for their favourite charities."

Nomination packages are due in by June 1st, with the nominees announced on July 1st and the winner announced every October.
