Traffic on the Hart Highway this misty late fall weekend

Prince George, B.C. -  It is in there: the chance of flurries in Environment Canada's forecast for this coming Friday.

And with the season of snow soon to be upon us, the Ministry of Transportation is joining the chorus of those calling on motorists to prepare for safe winter highway travel.

Minister Shirley Bond says, "Being prepared for winter driving not only makes your driving experience better, but can literally save lives."

Of course, the first thing motorists need to do is look critically at their tires -- temperatures of seven degrees or lower affect tire performance and our region is now in that temperature range.  Winter tires are designed to function better in lower temperatures and can shorten stopping distances by approximately 25-percent over all-season tires.

The ministry is also advising motorists planning to travel to pack a winter driving survival kit that includes: "a cellphone, jumper cables, extra clothing, food, flashlights, candles, and an assortment of tools and supplies."

There are now more than 160 highway webcam images on the DriveBC website to help plan your route at www.drivebc.ca

The Weather Network predicts freezing rain for Saturday, November 6, 2010.

Of course, that far out, the weather predictions are generally wrong anyway.

I mowed my lawn yesterday to mulch the leaves. Did people notice the fall dandelions have bloomed in the boulevards and have gone to seed? A sure sign that the City has put away its mowing equipment and is starting to see whether the snow removal equipment is still in working order. :-)
Environment Canada needs to get their act together - they have inaccurately predicted flurries at least a dozen times this fall. Its gotten to the point where the threat of snow has lost all meaning. Check the forecast, then check the temps - somebody needs to clue these meteorologists into the fact that water freezes at 0C, NOT 7. High 7, low 2, flurries. Yeah whatever, I'll get my raincoat...
Since when do we have to heed anyones advice about snow and ice in the future. Surely not from Shirley. This is poor news; also NOT news. A wasted column in my opinion.
Ever since the first Harry Potter book, the word 'ministry' gets me riled up.
A can of beens should be part of everyone's survival kit... it'll last the winter and great for protein when one needs it.

I figure the West Mud passing lane is a huge disaster waiting to happen... first big snow fall the highway will be closed for sure.
