Prince George, B.C. -  B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell says he realizes the 'cross-hairs' are on him, but he has no plans to remove himself from the line of fire...

Speaking on the Meisner program on CFIS Radio this morning, Campbell says he's got no plans to walk away from what's become a fight for his political life, with the ongoing HST controversy.

"As I said last night (during his televised Premier's address), there's no question following the introduction (of the HST), we should have been far more aggressive in explaining it to people, talking to people about it," he says.  "We didn't do a good job at all.  I take full responsibility for that and that probably is being reflected in how people are feeling (in terms of his recent dive in popularity)."

"But I can tell you this, I've never discovered that the way to get through to an important destination was to quit halfway," says the Premier.  He says the harmonized sales tax has put B.C.'s fundamental industries -- forestry, mining, energy, transportation and construction -- on a level playing field on the world scene.

"(And) I'm saying to people, you know, I'm willing to take your direction on it next September when you vote, but you should know this:  I think that this is a good thing from British Columbia."  Campbell says he realizes British Columbians are not nearly as concerned about what he thinks, "as what the mill manager thinks or what the mine manager thinks or what the construction foreman thinks about how this is going to impact them and it's about jobs in British Columbia."

Campbell credits his cabinet and caucus with remaining solidly behind him during 'these tough times'.  But he adds, "But I think they know that sometimes you've got to do what's right."

"Frankly, I feel a real obligation to them to hang in there and do a good job and, you know, you have to earn back people's trust -- it's not something they're going to give you on the basis of one speech or one news releaase -- it's what you do day-in and day-out and we're going to work really hard over the next little while to make sure the economy grows."  He says last night's announcement of a 15-percent cut in personal income tax was one such concrete step.

"I was just in Prince George the other day and someone said to me 'Keep going, you're doing the right things, way to go, I'm with you, let me know what I can do to help', so there's lots of people out there that are pulling for us, they're hard at work trying to make ends meet and trying to make sure their employees get paid and all those sorts of things, so there's lots of people out there pulling for us."

Too bad for me and some others I'm sure.
"I was just in Prince George the other day and someone said to me 'Keep going, you're doing the right things, way to go, I'm with you, let me know what I can do to help' - probably that syccophant, Pat Bell.
This is all political rhetoric, that same tired, old, "Pie in the sky, by and by" that we've been fed for years by every politician whose popularity is in the crapper after they've seriously mismanaged the economy/provincial finances/social programs, or in Campbell's case all of the above.
Consider this: even though this new income tax cut will strip millions of dollars out of revenues, he's promised that every new five year-old coming into the school system will be thoroughly assessed for their "learning potential" so that he can guarantee that every single grade four student will function at a grade four level within five years. The cost of a complete psycho-educational work-up can be as high as $2200 a pop and I can tell you that there are no where near enough school psychologists (especially in the North) to do this without completely abandoning all other assessment requirements.
Sheer nonsense!
I would really like Campbell's explanation of how taking money out of my pocket and giving it to large corporations is going to give me that warm and fuzzy feeling. With an ability like that he might qualify for a job along side Clark working for Jimmy when he gets booted out of office.
Of course someone in PG told him to stay the course. He does have a 9% approval rating. Wonder what the other 91% of the people would have told him.
Campbell also says he has created over 400,000 jobs in B.C. I'd like to know where and what these jobs were. I think he's full of crap, IMHO of course.
well to be fair Resident he did put money back in ur pocket last night. Unless u have no income.
As was said on Meisner this morning, the B.C.Rail issue just will not go away.
Unfortunately, the only one who can make an inquiry happen into the mess,is Campbell's government and Campbell himslef.
The outcome of the trial and the way it was ended is enough for me to never vote for a Liberal again.
We still have no answers and Campbell seems to think that is ok.
Well,it's not ok, and we will not forget!
It stinks..it smacks of dishonesty, and someday I think a little bird will start singing.
Funny how to a B.C.Liberal,it was all handled properly and all is well now.
They are not even embarrassed.
The people of B.C. are out millions with no thank-you's,no apologies, kiss my grits, nothing.
And that is no better than stealing our tax dollars from us.
That is gross arrogance, the likes of which we have rarely seen in B.C.
All is NOT well,it is not going to be well until we get answers, and unfortunately for Campbell,it could have been the one thing that redeemed this government.
Instead,it made a bad situation much worse.
Unforgiveable Gordon Campbell, and you get the heat for it!
You successfully killed your own government!
Obviously it must have been worth it!
Gordon Campbell is not in it for the long haul...he is done!
I listened to Campbell last night, he most elliquently changed the words but the message is the same... he wants the HST to help big business.. and we should be happy to help him do so...
So the words have changed but the lips are still spewing the same stuff...
I heard, out of his lips, at least two statements that I believe to be incorrect, or lies your pick the words.
But in the same instance stated nothing new had been taxed... ye it had and not only that but that which was being taxed is now 12% INSTEAD OF 6% and somehow he is still trying to say there was no increase in taxes... I say to that.... stuff that comes out of the north end of a south bound make cow!.
Taxpayers are out of pocket $240,000 for Campbell's TV address last night, as reported in the Vancouver Sun. Something just doesn't seem right about Campbell using the people's money to pay for a TV commercial, in an effort to improve his reputation. Why would this be an expense that we pay for? Shouldn't Campbell or the Liberal Party be covering the cost for their own damage control?
Well doggone and durnit, who the heck else we gonna vote fer? The NDP? Where's the leader?? Haven't seen one yet. The Green Party, yah right!
Have to wait and see who comes out the gate come election time, see who fits, who doesn't lie too much, again, yah right.
Campbell just does not get it. The popularity vote cannot be any clearer. If he thinks he is the only person that can lead the liberals, he is a fool and his ego has got the best of him. NDP does not have leadership so the pressure has to come from within the Liberal party or a new-comer who is bright and can lead. There are a few people still in politics (municipal) who can take his place in a heart beat. If the Liberals keep Campbell as the leader, the "people" will do want they did to Ernest Manning around 1970 in Alberta and left the Social Credit with only a few seats in the legislature. We will then be stuck with the NDP for the next 4-10 years. If the members of the Liberal party believe that the public will forget the conceit, lying and screw ups that have occurred under Campbell's leadership they deserve to lose. BUT this Province will suffer greatly, all because of one person at the helm and a bunch of followers. Liberals, please wake up!
Well... we have huge problems here in BC. We have in effect lost our democracy and the man who took it does it with a smile and your tax dollars to defend his actions.

Gordon Campbell not only implemented the HST without even discussing the matter with his elected MLA's much less his cabinet... but he recently reorganized the Ministries without even discussing the matter with the people running the Ministries that were amalgamated (ie Bill Bennett)... think about that for a moment... without so much as having a report done or discussing the changes with the Ministers responsible he came down with an edict and it was so... now he needed a cover for the HST, so he comes up with a 15% cut in tax to the provincial portion of your income tax... probably because 15% sounds like more than the 12% GST even though its less then a tenth in real dollars of the new HST... again no one in the legislature had a clue of the new 15% income tax give away or how it would be funded, because he discussed it with no one... we are to believe... some where some how policy is being made for BC and it comes down as an edict from Gordon Campbell and it is so... MLA's have had no say in the matter... even his own cabinet has no say in the matter... where do these laws come from... Gordon Campbell himself and his shadow government of policy makers... not the people we elected to our legislature... this should be crystal clear to everyone now... we don't live in a democracy anymore where our vote is what counts.

Furthermore, in a democracy issues and policy are discuss in the open... so that when one votes, one has an informed vote and knows what they are voting for. Obviously Gordon Campbell thinks this is not a necessary aspect of the democratic process.

Furthermore, if his edicts he issues concerning tax policy and changes to the function of government were policies he knew to be made in the genuine interest of BC... he would not have to lie and evade with half truths and sheer misdirection to achieve his goal of convincing people... his whole speech last night was disingenuous from his comparing the HST to the GST leaving out the PST for comparison... to calling repeatedly his 15% tax cut to the provincial portion of income tax as a 15% tax cut to your total income... or the 400,000 phantom jobs... or the details behind his estimate for $11 Billion in new spending... all of it rhetoric designed to mislead and avoid a genuine debate on the issues... issued from behind the curtains where no one can question his prepared propaganda at tax payer expense.

BC this is a man who has taken your democracy from you and feels he is above the rule of law in how our democratic process is supposed to work.. Gordon Campbell doesn't even consult his own cabinet ministers... Gordon Campbell is dangerous and the people of BC need to get rid of this man soon... his eyes are now set on BC Hydro and I believe he won't go on his own until he has removed BC Hydro from the people of BC... time is running and Gordon Campbell is still in power working with his shadow government from behind closed doors....
You anti HST guys seem to forget that you have won. The HST is going to referendum and if people vote against it then its done. Dont sit and squawk about no democracy...
I think what we need to happen in BC is a 3rd candidate option. We need open voices in our legislature that hold the balance of power and can do the work that corporate media refuses to do.

It should be abundantly clear by now that the ndp and Carol James are not the solution. It is an us against them type of process where the elections are won by negative politics, and not issues that one gets a mandate with. It is a closed process even to those we elect to represent us with the political pointy heads behind the scenes in the parties making all the decisions with no accountability, and in effect working hand in hand for special interest and the status quo.

I have a solution that would work. It requires leadership though and that leadership will have to come from the bottom up.

We need to separate private sector unions from the ndp, and the small business sector from the liberals. We need them to combine forces in an alliance for the working middle class or risk getting swamped with further deterioration in our standard of living as we have government by and for the international bankster financiers and their twin cousins in big government employment.

We need the Third Independent option.

Support for the best third party candidate or independent in at least 40 ridings... not enough to gain power, but enough to ensure no party has a majority to dictate and thus accountability through the legislature and a new way of empowering Ministers through legislature wide votes and not picked like a hand of cards by the premier himself... thereby making the premier just another minister and not a dictator.

Support of the best third party candidate or independent in each riding as a representative of a common interest between 'private sector unions' and 'small business ' interests... to act as a balance between big finance monopolist liberals, and big public sector union ndp... as a go between with the balance of power.

If say for example the Steelworkers took the lead... declared they will now act in the interest of their members (the working middle class) and form a committee that will poll its members as to the most viable 3rd party candidate that meets the requirement of supporting the 'private sector unions' and 'small business' in the name of free enterprise... once a candidate wins the support of the members the union would use its resources of organization and finance to back the selected third party candidates with the intention that it is a partnership with small business to also back those same candidates... one per riding regardless of their politics in other areas.

Like how the NRA operates... bi-partisan... if a nominated candidate crosses the interest of small business and the private sector unions (the working middle class) the support is yanked, and if they are an incumbent then another 3rd party candidate is selected or in special circumstances a ndp or liberal candidate could get the support in exceptional circumstances. If they are loyal they continue to receive support.

We need to take the power out of the political hacks in the political parties that are steeling our democracy from us.

This way with say a third of the legislature made up of independents who's only concern is to represent the working middle class we ensure debate and informed voting on the issues that effect the middle class. We retain the power to make or break the third party candidates by pulling support if they cross the line... and give them the kiss of death sanction by private sector union members and their new partners in small business who have more in common now days then most people realize.

The liberals without accountability represent international globalist finance and the interest of the monopolists that hurt small business development (the small businesses create all the jobs)... and the ndp without accountability represent the public sector unions and the graft of tax payer dollars for insane compensation and benefits not dreamed of in the private sector... we all pay for this back scratching between the actors on both sides and only through bringing back open and democratic debate can we protect the interest of the working middle class who today are not represented in any way at all.

The first third party candidates supported should be Bob Simpson and Blair Lekstrom.. they can be the mold of independent MLA's who represent their constituents this new third party candidate movement can use as their poster politicians... candidates should be in place and ready to go in all the recall ridings as well so we can get a minority legislature accountable to the people as soon as possible.

I believe this is the only way we can get our democracy back before we loose it for good.. trying to find an all encompassing third party that is viable across a province as vast and diverse as BC is next to impossible only through a process to select and support a few of the brightest in the third party or independent option can we ensure the interests of the working middle class are supported.
When the people are not informed BEFORE decisions are made.. it is not democracy.
Delaying the vote for a year after the fact is not democracy... it buys him time to create more smoke and mirrors.
He's finished, and he knows it!
Bang on Eagleone, and we should make no mistake about it...that is exactly what Campbell is doing.
He is simply buying time!
And he has 3 weeks before the leadership convention and his party eats him alive with a nice bottle of overly expensive merlot!
The anti HST group havent won. When will people realize that we are dealing with a Government that does not do what it says it will do. If they sold BC Rail and brought in the HST after saying they wouldnt, then why would you beleive that they would scrap the HST if the referendum passes. There are a number of problems with Campbells promise.

1. He and he alone has said that the Government will abide by the result of the referendum. Problem is he may not be around after it passes.

2. We dont know yet how the the question will look on the referendum

3. He has not said specifically that he will reinstate the PST.

4. They have stated that they will not make any refunds to taxpayers.

5. They have stated that they will not pass Vanderzalms bill in the legislature.

So what we have in effect is a promise from a Premier who has trouble keeping his word. No legislation in effect that would compel him by law to abide by the legislation in Vanderzalms bill. So dont expect to much after the referendum.

I would expect the following if the referendum passes to get rid of the HST. The Government will either reduce it to a lower level and call it a VAT (Value Added Tax) or eliminate it altogether and reimplement some other kind of tax to make up for lost revenue. If they do not reinstate the PST they will be out billions of dollars in revenue. Fat chance they will let that happen.

This is why the recalls are so important. We cannot wait until after the referendum, because they will then take another year to debate the elimination of the tax etc; and two years or more will have gone by.

With the recalls we can force them to make some decisions sooner rather than later, and if necessary we can force them out of Government if they do not get off their asses and kill this tax.

Dont go to sleep and think this job is done. It has only started. You are dealing with people who have only one objective. To make huge piles of money at your expense.

Im sure part of the reason that Campbell went on TV was to praise the HST, however I suspect that the real reason was to take the press away from the BC Rail fiasco. Seems like it is working.
I have to agree with alot of what your saying Palopu. There is something not right with Campbell's head,I don't think the elevator goes all the way to the top.He has an ego which may be unequaled in the history of British Columbia, maybe the entire world. The man knows how most people feel about him,yet he can find one person who stands in his cheerleading camp, and try to twist it into some momentum building swing, into his parties favour. Before the last election,I was pretty fed up with Campbell and the Liberals then as a result of the carbon tax,but I knew they would win the election because Campbell knew how to win,and he seemed fairly formidable as a leader. Now my opinion is that he is a huge joke, and he is slowly turning BC into the laughing stock province of Canada,as it was in the late 90's.I think maybe it's time that Campbell's employer(the People of BC),ask for a psych evaluation for both Campbell and Colin Hansen.
Campbell suffers from severe narcissism
disorder. His arrogance and sense of superiority and sense of entitlement,
his inability to process shame, seeing
himself as perfect and his exploitation
of public and his recent public displays, they are all signs of his mental problems.

He should have been committed to Betty Ford after his drinking and driving conviction in the US.

The people of Prince George expected him
to talk about the problems of the city,
the unemployment, the gang problems, the recent nurses union strike and the
chronic discrimination issues in UNBC.

Instead Campbell's EGO was in full display ...

I agree Palopu...I also think Campbell was trying to deflect the fallout from the B.C.Rail scam and the way it ended.
Not that shutting down the trial came as any suprise.
When it starting getting too close,it appears Campbell,Hansen, and de Jong killed it and cost taxpayers millions and millions.
What is even more disgusting is that they are going to get away with it, and we are letting them.
We should have been screaming in the streets!
Campbell. Ha! His little 15% tax break is nullified by the HST. They give you money you basically don't have with one hand and then they take it away from you with the other in the form of the HST, increased user fees for health care, etc.
All bullcrap. I will vote for the party who promises to terminate the HST.
I call bullshit on gordo. The hst was merely the last straw; the straw that broke the camel's back. From the sale of BC Rail to the hst he has much to answer for in hell. I doubt we'll get any reasonable answers out of him on this (still) green earth.

Btw I believe hood rich and interceptor are up for another round of koolaid. Shills and fools.
