Gordon Campbell Here For Long Haul

Prince George, B.C. - B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell says he realizes the 'cross-hairs' are on him, but he has no plans to remove himself from the line of fire...
Speaking on the Meisner program on CFIS Radio this morning, Campbell says he's got no plans to walk away from what's become a fight for his political life, with the ongoing HST controversy.
"As I said last night (during his televised Premier's address), there's no question following the introduction (of the HST), we should have been far more aggressive in explaining it to people, talking to people about it," he says. "We didn't do a good job at all. I take full responsibility for that and that probably is being reflected in how people are feeling (in terms of his recent dive in popularity)."
"But I can tell you this, I've never discovered that the way to get through to an important destination was to quit halfway," says the Premier. He says the harmonized sales tax has put B.C.'s fundamental industries -- forestry, mining, energy, transportation and construction -- on a level playing field on the world scene.
"(And) I'm saying to people, you know, I'm willing to take your direction on it next September when you vote, but you should know this: I think that this is a good thing from British Columbia." Campbell says he realizes British Columbians are not nearly as concerned about what he thinks, "as what the mill manager thinks or what the mine manager thinks or what the construction foreman thinks about how this is going to impact them and it's about jobs in British Columbia."
Campbell credits his cabinet and caucus with remaining solidly behind him during 'these tough times'. But he adds, "But I think they know that sometimes you've got to do what's right."
"Frankly, I feel a real obligation to them to hang in there and do a good job and, you know, you have to earn back people's trust -- it's not something they're going to give you on the basis of one speech or one news releaase -- it's what you do day-in and day-out and we're going to work really hard over the next little while to make sure the economy grows." He says last night's announcement of a 15-percent cut in personal income tax was one such concrete step.
"I was just in Prince George the other day and someone said to me 'Keep going, you're doing the right things, way to go, I'm with you, let me know what I can do to help', so there's lots of people out there that are pulling for us, they're hard at work trying to make ends meet and trying to make sure their employees get paid and all those sorts of things, so there's lots of people out there pulling for us."
