KGV in its original state circa 1922

The  names of the people who are backing a moive of KGV have been revealed, they are Ed and Lynn Gilliard .  The couple cares for heritage and is keen to save KGV by moving the building to their multi-acre property to the north of Hudson Bay Slough.

“This project is not about us." says Ed Gilliard "This project is about saving what Lynn and I and many people around us feel is a one-of-a-kind heritage building and sharing that with the community as it will re-emerge from its stucco covering.”

To assist with the move and refurbishing the “public” part of the building, the Gilliards are creating a non profit society called “Friends of KGV”. They also hope to have the building designated as a heritage building by City Hall.

During the past weeks they have been working hard to determine the feasibility of such a project. That has included deciding on the eventual use of the building; the logistics and costs associated with moving the building; the conditions of an agreement with the School District which would allow them to remove the building; the permitting process through City Hall to meet with the timelines set by SD57 and many other logistic and financial considerations.

A successful outcome will see the building restored as close as possible to its original 1922 exterior appearance. It will provide a public space encompassing the foyer plus one rebuilt classroom. The remainder of the building will be refurbished for other uses. The building is proposed to be located in a historic area of Prince George, close enough to other attractions to allow it to be included on a mapped tourist walk of historic buildings and sites of interest to residents and tourists.

The Community Heritage Commission Chairman, Jo Graber, has stated the Commission supports the efforts of the Gilliards to move the building and looks forward to the authorities who have some control over the situation assisting the Gilliards in their efforts. He says the Commission has unanimously supported the idea of the moving of the building as a long as the  whole building goes.  "Fairly quickly we would like to meet with the School District and the  architect to discuss design of Duchess Park" says Graber as roight now, the School DIstrict is working on a design of a new school that would incorporate elements of  KGV.
