Prince George, B.C. – Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, Shirley Bond, says she was shocked by the decision by Premier Gordon Campbell to resign.
Speaking with Opinion 250 on the phone from Korea, Minister Bond says “It is not just about a Premier, it’s about a friend. I think people can form their own opinions about Gordon Campbell, but, I have had the privilege of working with him for a decade and more, and today he did what he exemplifies, and that is, putting the Province of British Columbia before his own personal interests.”
On a mission to promote the Asia Pacific trans-shipment corridor, Bond says it is very difficult today to be so far away from her team “But I am doing exactly what the Premier would want me to do, the Asia Pacific is an enormous opportunity for us, in great part due to a Premier who made it a priority.”
She says she hopes people will take time to reflect on the good things that were accomplished under Gordon Campbell’s leadership, especially when it comes to Northern B.C. “I can tell you from very personal experience, he cared about Northern British Columbia. When we went to him with an issue like the Cancer Centre, or the Cariboo Connector, he was always there to listen. Despite how people feel about Gordon Campbell I can tell you, unequivocally, that when we, as northern MLA’s, went to speak to him, he listened, he acted and I think that as you look around the North today, you will see a strong visual and physical representation of the legacy he has brought to the North. There was no one who drove the Northern Medical Program and decided it was going to happen more than Gordon Campbell. There was no one who said, including the previous government, who said northerners deserve a cancer centre whether the numbers said we should or not. He said, you’re getting a cancer centre. That’s the kind of opportunity we had with him to deliver for northern British Columbians.”
Saying it is far too early to speculate about a new leader, she says she offers the assurance that she and Pat Bell will be “Vigorous in the days ahead to assure northerners that we will continue to have a strong role in the future of British Columbia.”
But for today, Minister Bond says she wants to take time to reflect on all the positive accomplishments and say thank you for the friendship and the opportunities presented her as part of Campbell’s team “I cannot tell you how grateful I am to a Premier who gave me opportunities I never dreamed that I would have. I am very grateful to a Premier who saw this northern MLA as someone who could contribute as a senior cabinet minister”.
