Mackenzie, B.C. – Lumber production is back underway at one of the Conifex sawmills in Mackenzie.
The company says its Site II sawmill began churning out lumber Monday on a one-shift basis. Officials say output from the restarted facility will total 110 million board feet on an annual basis. The Site I Conifex operation in Mackenzie is still idle.
Along with the restart of the Mackenzie mill, Conifex has also announced the appointment of Blair Mayes as Chief Operating Officer. Mayes is a graduate of the UBC Forestry Program and an industry veteran with nearly 30 years at Dunkley Lumber, most recently as General Manager.
Conifex says Mayes’ main responsibilities will be the oversight and continued development of the company’s forestry and manufacturing facilities at Fort St. James and Mackenzie. He will also play an important role in industry and community relations for Conifex.
He takes on his new position November 15th.

A long time coming. Congratulations Mckenzie!I hope this is just beginning of a full fledged fire up!
Nice to see Blair Mayes on board! Other than that it is same old same old. Same management as before???????
Good for you Mckenzie!! Maybe with increased markets and lumber prices some of our mills in P.G. will restart too. Hope so.
Folks.. I hate to bring bad news but this is the reality that is going on..Definitly would NOT be celebrating just yet.

Unless the production from this mill is going overseas (Primarily China) i wouldnt be celebrating. Another mill opening selling lumber to the US will only dilute the lumber prices further prolonging the downturn and softwood lumber agreement.

Not looking good if these guys get their way.

We are looking at the softwood lumber agreement going to arbitration and they are targeting the interior of BC specificaly. To sum things up we could be seeing another tarrif on lumber exported to the US. If this happens there will be more mill closures.. And this is a very high possibilty that the US will win on this one because of the minipulation in the timber pricing system in the interior of bc by a few companies.

You do have a point northman!
Best of luck to Mackenzie...you are due for a break!
By the way...Best of luck to Mackenzie as well.
I lived in fort st james during the worst times when only one mill was running. So i know how it feels once a mill finaly starts up again.
I think without Mt Millgan these two communitys would be screwed. Im not counting on a correction in lumber prices for a long time. Still some very tough times ahead for the forest industry as we know it. And i think if any company can pull it off Conifiex is the company that will come out strong once the dust settles.

Cheers!
