Prince George, B.C. - B.C. Forests Minister Pat Bell's visit to China featured a ground-breaking ceremony today for the construction of a three-storey, wood-frame building with retail shops on the ground floor and an elementary school on the upper two floors.
The 800 m2 "Market Street" project is being built by one of the largest providers of building materials in China, using Canadian building technology and B.C. wood projects in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province. The structure is designed to show local developers that hybrid, wood-frame buildings are structurally sound, cost competitive with concrete, brick and steel construction, and energy efficient.
Both Bell and Federal Minister of Natural Resources, Christian Paradis, say the development signals the growing acceptance of Canadian wood-frame technology across China.
Bell says breaking into China's mid-rise commercial sector is a "game-changer for our industry because their current level of construction activity is twice that of Canada and the U.S. combined."
Minister Paradis China is the fastest growing export market for Canadian wood products, but, until now, most sales have been in coastal regions like Shanghai, "Promoting our wood products in other parts of the country will create new customers and generate more consistent, long-term demand."
