George Street Upgrades Underway

Prince George, B.C.- Most of the excavation work on George Street should be complete within three weeks.

The Prince George street has been torn up between 3rd and 5th Avenues, to install the necessary power lines for the new light standards that will be installed.

“This street didn’t have street lighting before because it had the canopies” says Mick Jones, City Streets Supervisor “so we’ve had to tear up a 16 inch strip between the curb and the sidewalk to install ducting for the wiring. That strip will be covered over with paving stones.”

The overall project is worth $250 thousand dollars and will  include new light standards, like those on 3rd Avenue, but they will be black, not blue.

The new lighting has been ordered, but may not be ready for delivery until the spring.

No lights on a sections of George Street for almost a year?

1. Take down canopies - 2 to 3 weeks
2. dig trench, install conductors and light post pedestals - 3 weeks
3. install lamp posts - 1 to 2 weeks

Total length of well planned project - 6 to 8 weeks?

Why is this taking so long? Materials such as light fixtures are typically ordered well in advance of any other parts of a project like this.
When the awnings were up people complained about them.

When the awnings were taken down people complained about the ugly mess left behind on the buildings and asked why the city took them down in the first place.

Now people are complaining about how long it's taking to install the light fixtures.

Yet no one bothers to mention how much better the street looks!

Stop belly-aching about everything. It's pretty easy to throw stones, a whole lot harder to stand up and be part of the solution.

I agree with Gus. The order for the lamp standards should have been placed a couple months ago. If there was a top 5 list of places downtown that need to be well lit for safety, George Street would be right near the top.
I am part of the solution. I am suggesting how to run a construction project properly so that one of the more unsafe streets in the community is not leftin the dark.

Obviously too late this time, but they can put it into their bring forward basket for the next project.

They can also talk about it a bit to find out what went wrong.

And it did go wrong. So face up to it and do it better the next time.

Look at is as part of the continuous improvement system at City Hall.
Middle Ground.

With your attitude, nothing would ever improve.

You know those "suggestion boxes" there used to be. Consider this site working as a suggestion box. It is not called "opinion 250" for nothing.
"Yet no one bothers to mention how much better the street looks!"

That is a matter of opinion. If you were to listen a bit more carefully, those people who wrote and talked about the uggly mess left behind when the canopies were removed actually were giving an opinion about how the "look" of the street changed. You were just not listening.

I am going to tick you off even more, MiddleGround.

Here is how the removal could have been conducted.

The city work with the DBIA and the business/building owners along the street to talk about

1. the timing of the canopy removal,
2. the likely appearance of each individual building as a result,
3. offer to provide them assistance with planning what they will do to mitigate the potential unsightliness (develop design guidelines)
4. identify tax relief for facade improvements
5. consider helping with setting up loan programs with bank(s)
6. work with design panel
Like I mentioned last week, anyone with a can of paint and a brush gonna attack those ugly post canopy buildings on George St?
What about trees along George st?
What about trees along George Street?

I believe if anyone is going to put trees along there it is several thousands of dollars per tree and it will have to be paid for by the adjacent property owners.

Again, something the DBIA can decide to pay for.

I do not recall any such things being specifically in the budget they presented.

BTW, has anyone heard anything from the DBIA lately? Awfully quiet it seems.

I see they let the domain for the prvious organization expire. So, may not be on the internet anymore. Turned into a very secretive society perhaps. What are they doing with the money they are collecting. Have seen no sidewalk sales, George street opening on BC Day.

I know, they are planning a big Santa Parade this year!!! :-)
