District Energy System Passes Environmental Test
By 250 News
Prince George, B.C. - The Downtown District energy system has received an environmental assessment approval from the Federal Government. This is the final regulatory approval needed before the City can move forward
Project Manager Bob Radloff says this means the detailed design can start now, with the hope to send the project to tender in April of 2011.
Radloff says it is hoped the new system could be up and running in 2012.
The project will see Lakeland Mills provide the biomass to the burner which will then distribute heat through piping under the CN tracks to the downtown core. There are a number of buildings already set to be part of this new heating system, including, City Hall, the 4 Seasons Pool, the Courthouse, Colliseum, Civic Centre, Art Gallery, Coast Inn of the North, the Ramada Hotel and the Plaza 400.
The project has a $14.1 million dollar price tag. Most of that amount has been approved in grants but the City of Prince George will still need to borrow about $3.7 million to pay for the project.
