Foothills Closure to Protect Roadway

Prince George, BC.- There is no telling when the big logging trucks will be allowed back on to Foothills Boulevard from Chief Lake Road to North Nechako Road.
City Staff say a weight restriction was put into place late yesterday to keep  the really heavy traffic off Foothills because of the damage to the road. While staff say the primary damage is north of the Foothills land fill, the City wanted to make sure trucks didn’t scoot down Austin Road or Highland Drive  to get around the worst of the pavement.
The closure also means the big  southbound trucks will be forced to go past the weigh scales on the Hart highway.
City staff say the restrictions will not impact gravel, or waste hauling trucks as their weight, even with pups, is below the 46,500 kg limit. But, should there be a truck which exceeds the weight restriction which needs to get to the Foothills landfill, the driver can apply to the City for a special permit.
The weight restrict remains in place until further notice.

As a trucker I can certainly see the need for trucks to be scaled to ensure they are complying with the laws. However not too many people know that being pulled into the scales can be quite detrimental to a truckers paycheck even if he is found to be in complete compliance of all laws.

With many truckers being paid with the antiquated 'pay by mile' system still today it is most important for drivers to maximize their mileage on a day to day basis. When truckers are delayed at the scales for however long it takes to do an inspection the driver isn't being compensated for that time. As a result many (not all) truckers feel the pressure to make up that time. This could be in the form of speeding or 'modifying' their log books so they can get further down the road. Couple that with the pressures that dispatch puts on drivers to make their delivery times on time and on budget and its easy to see why most drivers choose to avoid the scale house when possible.

Why are there problems on this strech of Foothills? Wasnt it built as a connector to Highway #16 West. Foothills isn’t the only street the City has problems with. Most of them wouild be adequte for say lake front property where the trsffic is heavy on weekends by light vehicles.

The manderins at City Hall don’t seem to realize they are the problem not our roads.
Cheers
I suspect you are right Retired. I think this decision has more to do with directing flow past the scales than it does road preservation.
The foothills bridge also has a long going weight restriction.
The city has no problem allowing heavy trucks to travel along Domano to allow the drivers to park them in our residential neighbourhood overnight. Loaded log trucks and lowbeds are a common sight down there.
Interceptor, why would the city make this decision just to ensure the trucks go through the scales. Thats ridiculous!
If this new rule is for that purpose do you really think they would try to get compliance by playing retarded childish games?
in a word - Yes ;-)
LOL, I suppose you got me there. hahaha!
A 100,000 lb load on our city blvd. No, let the provincial highway system deal with that kind of load. Average 1040sf home with out the basement likely weights in at around 20,000 lb.

Nope, Our city roads do not need to be designed for that kind of load. Infact, they probably should start fining these people bringing their loaded logging trucks home. The provincial highways, have pavement thickness of 5 inches, while most residential has 2 1/2 inches of asphalt. Thus causing failure to the surface, and sub base.
Hmmmm, I wonder if those logging trucks illegally using the Foothills bridge would not mind coughing up some money to pay for the repairs of reinforcing the bridge beams.
The city uses very low standards for the road base on alll city streets. This has been the case probably since they started paving them. That is the reason why pavement doesn't stand up to normal use. That's why we will always have pothole filled streets.
Retired: "Wasnt it built as a connector to Highway #16 West."

Nope, it wasn't.

Foothills is a city arterial road. It goes to Chief Lake Road, not the Highway at this time. It is planned to extend to the north with a branch to the east to link up to Hwy 97 at Burgess Rd.

On the other end it stops at 15th and may be linked to Ferry one of these days.

It is not a truck route and should never be a truck route. It is a City "ring" Road arterial, almost "parkway" like in sections with wonderful views of the city in several locations. A nice route to take visitors to the City.
