Hunkering down at the stables for a few more days of bitter cold
Prince George, B.C. - Last Wednesday's storm was a rude introduction to what is expected to be a colder winter than normal thanks to La Nina...
The blizzard that blasted across the region, knocking power out as it went, gave way to deep-freeze conditions through the weekend. (click on photo at right for a short reminder of the storm's fury)
The lower than normal temperatures will continue until Thursday when the forecast calls for snow.
Today, Environment Canada is calling for another day of sunshine, but bitter cold as a 30-k wind from the north will make the forecast high of minus-18, feel like minus-33 with the wind chill -- that means there is the risk of frostbite, so take care when outdoors and remember your pets need special attention.
(Although, the little guy in the video at left is not a 'pet', he was certainly scurrying to find warmth over the weekend)
The wind will ease slightly this evening, but the overnight low of minus-25 will feel like minus-30 with the wind chill. The high on Tuesday is forecast to be minus-19, clouds will move in on Wednesday and the temperature will reach minus-15, before climbing to a high of minus-5 on Thursday with periods of snow.
According to Environment Canada, winter storms and excessive cold claim over 100 lives each year in this country -- more than the combined number of deaths caused by hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, extreme heat and lightning each year.
