Spruce Kings Have Long Road To Rebuild
by Hartley Miller
When a man loses his job, even in the hockey business, it is always a difficult time for that individual, his family and even the “team”.
Like anyone, Ed Dempsey had his share of faults, but his dedication to the Prince George Spruce Kings Organization during his six-plus years with the team should not be questioned.
The Spruce Kings needed a shake-up. That is what happens in hockey and sports when a team is struggling. Dempsey paid the ultimate price for a club that missed the playoffs last season, and mustered a measly six wins in 30 games this season.
The time has come to move forward for both Dempsey and the Spruce Kings, a team looking to
“a change of direction”.
The players, and new coach Dave Dupas, will now be on the hot seat. It should be noted that Dupas, understands turmoil first hand after coaching last season with the now departed Williams Lake Timberwolves of the BCHL.
The Spruce Kings Team President, Darcy Buryn, heads a committee that will oversee the duties of a General Manager. This is not an ideal situation, especially when the team is in a state of transition, but perhaps finances are playing a role with that temporary decision.
The second half of the BCHL season is about to begin. I am sure the Spruce Kings will get a spark in the short term, like many teams do following a change of this significance.
On the long term, however, this franchise has a huge rebuilding job in order to regain credibility.
