UNBC President Dr. George Iwama uses a tiger torch to ignite the hog fuel in the gasifier
Prince George, B.C. - UNBC has taken another step towards heating the core campus buildings with bio-energy.
With torch in hand, UNBC President George Iwama ignited the sawmill residue in the gasifier this morning to start the system. Gasification works by subjecting the biomass to high temperatures and only about 20% of the oxygen required for full combustion. This serves to convert the wood to a clean-burning synthetic gas that will then be combusted to heat water, which is piped around the campus to heat the buildings.
The system is still a few months from being fully operational.
The bioenergy building is being constructed by IDL Projects of PG, with equipment provided by Vancouver-based Nexterra. The fuel is being provided by Lakeland Mills of Prince George.
