RCMP Investigate Murder Of Fraser Lake-area Teen
Prince George, B.C. - Tragic news for the community of Fraser Lake this evening, as RCMP confirm they're investigating the murder of a 15-year-old girl from the area.
A 20-year-old Prince George man is in custody. And police are releasing more information about the chain-of-events that led to the discovery of the young girl's body in a wooded area, alongside an unused logging road approximately 20-kilometres north of Vanderhoof.
RCMP North District Senior Media Relations Officer, Corporal Dan Moskaluk, says an officer with the Fort St. James detachment was driving south on Highway 27 just before 10pm Saturday evening when he noticed a pick-up truck turn onto the route from the old logging road.
Corporal Moskaluk says, given the time of night and remote area, the officer considered it suspicious and pulled the truck over. As a result of his conversation with the driver, the lone male was detained.
RCMP called in a Conservation Services Officer to conduct a thorough search of the area. Corporal Moskaluk says, "On his arrival, the conservation oficer followed the vehicle tracks back into the area from which it had emerged."
"As the CSO examined the area, he located the lifeless body of the teenage girl at around 11:50pm, a distance from the side road." Moskaluk says, "The state of the young girl indicated that she had been murdered just hours before the man's arrest."
Officers with the North District Major Crimes Unit are conducting the investigation. Moskaluk says they continue to secure the scene this evening and he expects them to be on-site all day Monday. The victim's body has since been removed. The cause of death is not being released at this time. An autopsy is expected to be conducted early to mid-week.
Moskaluk says assistance and support is being offered to the family of the young girl via RCMP victim services.
