Prince George, B.C. - With the investigation into the murder of a 15-year-old Fraser Lake-area girl still very much in the early stages, RCMP are not releasing any details with regards to the nature of the relationship between the victim and the suspect.
A 20-year-old Prince George man remains in custody. He was arrested at the side of Highway 27 between Vanderhoof and Fort St. James just before 10pm Saturday night. RCMP, with the assistance of a Conservation Services officer, located the body of the young victim in a wooded area alongside an unused logging road just before midnight Sunday. When asked about the relationship between the two, RCMP North District Senior Media Relations Officer, Corporal Dan Moskaluk, says he doesn't have any information of that nature from the investigative team, just yet.
"In regards to background history and who the individuals are -- it's very soon in the investigation," says the Corporal. "The priorities being the collection of evidence from the scene for investigation and, parallel to that is assisting (the victim's) family directly, so limited information is being released, given the recency of the incident."
As for any connections between this homicide and ongoing unsolved investigations in the region, Corporal Moskaluk says, "We're not ruling out anything at this time." But, he adds, "There are no direct or evident-linkages at this time."
He does says investigators involved in the murder of Cynthia Maas in Prince George earlier this fall have been made aware of this investigation and "are liaising with this latest investigative team."
The body of Cynthia Maas was discovered near LC Gunn Regional Park by an RCMP Dog Services team in the area on an unrelated search. Then, as with this weekend's incident, Corporal Moskaluk is crediting the vigilance of the police officers involved, "We go by the way of 'when in doubt, check it out' -- and, once again, in very similar fashion to Cynthia Maas, we've come to this unsettling discovery of a body."
