It looked like a position that could be a duplication of services already in place, but City Manager George Paul says that is not the case "The proposal is to have an events hosting function as opposed to an events procurement function, that's the difference between what Events Prince George already does, and what the proposed "Events Hosting" position is looking for".
It was Councilor Glenn Scott who raised the question during the budget deliberations as the proposed position carries an $80,000 salary plus a vehicle allowance. "I guess maybe I'm just thinking that the police are looking for some extra officers, and I sure would like to have the money to do that" says Scott.
It was one of three proposed Community Services positions set over to a later date. The other two are for a Supervisor and a Co-ordinator.
The three positions carried total annual salaries of $260,000.00 although if hired this year, the full salary would not be applied. The three postings would add nearly $180,000.00 to this year's budget.
Council has requested a detailed business plan to show how the positions can generate income.
Also deferred were two proposed positions with the Civic Facilities division. One ( with an annual salary of just over $93,000.00) may be funded by B.C. Hydro and the Community Works Fund, as it is a position designed to find savings in energy use. The other position is for a Civic Facilities Technical Supervisor.
All five jobs are expected to be back for discussion on March 1st.
The Next budget session is set for the 13th. It will start at 4:30 and will focus on Development Services.
