Prince George, B.C.- Minister of Forests, Mines and Lands, Pat Bell says there has been no change in the funding for forestry research. “The focus has shifted to increasing growth and forest yield” says Bell.
Bell was responding to  comments made by  the Confederation of University Faculty Association of B.C.  at a news conference at UNBC this afternoon.
Earlier today, Robert Clift, Executive Director of  the Confederation of University Faculty Association of B.C  said the Ministry of Forests had dis-banded its own research branch. That is not so says Bell, who says  while some may be under the Forestry wing, and others may be under lands and mines, there has been no change in staffing levels.
Clift issued a call to leadership candidates in the Province to “ clearly articulate a comprehensive and sustainable research strategy for the province.”
Minister Bell says the research  funding envelopes are still in place, and there has been no change in the past ten months.

So maybe Bell can explain why he laid off all but one growth-and-yield forester in the province?

Bell' has lost all credibility on NSR, research, tree planting, silviculture, beetle management, and sustainable forest management -- on the whole forestry file.

Time for a Commission of Inquiry into management of forests and environment in the public interest
The cuts to forestry over the last 10 years has been a calculated effort to slowly reduce those in the ministry who would publish research which would promote good forest management. It has been an effort to quell the independent voices and to cater more to the interests of big business.
