As health care unions settle in for contract negotiations, a report today on the hefty pay increases handed some Northern Administrators last year.
The CBC is reporting Northern Health CEO Malcom Maxwell got a 19 % wage hike pushing his annual salary to $250 thousand dollars while six other top managers with Northern Health got wage hikes of between 7 and 24%.
Northern Health says the pay reflects recruitment and retention issues in the north but is still less than the amount paid to others doing similar jobs in other regions.
Meantime, the Hospital Employees Union is heading into negotiations hoping to recoup some losses. Specifically, wage increases of 3.5 per cent annually over a three-year contract, restoring the 36-hour work week, and a significant signing bonus funded from the $1 billion set aside from the current budgetary surplus.
HEU secretary-business manager Judy Darcy says health care workers took the brunt of government restraint in the public sector when the government rolled back the wage agreement two years ago.
“The B.C. government has banked hundreds of millions of dollars taken from our members’ pay cheques through wage cuts,” says Darcy. “Now with a robust economy and a growing surplus, it's time for a fair deal for health care workers that recognizes this inequity – and addresses very real recruitment and retention issues.”
