The Chairman of the Northern Health Authority, Jeff Burghardt, says the CBC report on CEO Malcolm Maxwell's salary is a little off the mark.
In 2004/05, Maxwell was paid $233,014.00 in salary and benefits, plus $23,172.00 in expenses for a total of $256,186.00. His salary increase in 2005 was 8.7%, and his salary had been boosted by 9.5% the previous year, for a two year total increase of 18.2%.
Burghardt notes Maxwell is responsible for administering a budget of about $700 million dollars and his salary increases follow a detailed performance review. "Mr. Maxwell is relatively new to this Health Region, (3 years) and he has brought Northern Health to a new level" says Burghardt who added it was important to compensate someone of Maxwell's ability in order to keep him.
All of the salaries over $75,000 are available to the public. A quick look shows Malcolm Maxwell won't be getting the T-4 slip with the highest taxable income listed. That honour goes to Dr. Lorna Medd, the Medical Health Officer. She was paid $264,292.00 in 2005 and had expenses of $12,337.00. Her colleague Dr. David Bowering is right behind her. As the Chief Medical Health Officer, Bowering was paid $260,002.00 and expenses of $15,696.00
Rounding out the $200 grand club is David Bucher, who is recorded as having been paid $233,740.00 with expenses of $12,893.00
Burghardt says the salaries received by all 6 Regional CEO's in the province of B.C. are below the average salary for a similar CEO in the rest of the country.
Will Maxwell get another raise this year? Board Chairman Jeff Burghardt says he doesn't know, but Maxwell is up for a performance review in April.
