Prince George, B.C. – A new resource on the Northern Health website is now available to communities, individuals and researchers interested in learning more about things that influence the health of residents of Northern BC.

The Community Health Information Portal (CHIP) is a public health data repository that includes a wide range of information and statistics on factors that determine whether people are healthy; often referred to as determinants of health. 

“Real improvements in community health require partnerships between people working in a variety of sectors”, said Dr. David Bowering, Northern Health’s chief medical health officer. “Access to good information is an important component of effective collaboration.” 

CHIP’s purpose is to bring together information on factors like living conditions, income, employment, education, housing, food, the environment, personal choices and behaviours, and of course, the ability to access high-quality integrated health care services – all from a northern perspective.

For example, CHIP includes the following:

·        Detailed profiles of 36 communities in Northern BC, including many First Nations communities

·        Detailed socioeconomic profiles and indices for most areas of BC, (through BC Stats)

·        Detailed maps of the North showing health indicators, environment and resources, Aboriginal peoples and communities, health services, and more;

·        Access to the Canadian Geographic Names Database and the BC Atlas of Wellness

·        Projections on how many Northerners will develop cancer

·        Statistics on injury and hospitalization

CHIP has already received positive feedback from organizations including the Center for Addictions Research in BC, the BC Provincial Health Officer and BC Stats.
