Prince George, B.C. -  Today marks the start of the final seven shopping days until Christmas, and local retailers are expecting big business in the final push to December 25th.

Shelley Readman, Marketing Director at Pine Centre Mall, says traffic levels have been up dramatically so far this month, compared to last year, and, she says there is definitely a sense that momentum is building.  The sale of Pine Centre mall gift cards is up nine-percent over the same time last year.

And Readman says jewellery stores, in particular, have had an incredibly strong November-December with some record sales days, which indicates luxury items are back on shoppers' lists.  "They're are looking to buy some 'baubles', whereas in Christmases-past that may not have been the case."

In addition, Readman says the mall has noticed that shoppers from across the region are returning, two-fold.  "If there's more money in the household, perhaps they will spend the weekend in the city and can afford to be out-and-about, as opposed to staying closer to home."

Based on the month's strong start, Readman is expecting nothing but tidings of great joy for mall retailers in the week ahead,  "The bulk of business is going to be done in the next seven days and, based on the strong start, we're very excited about how we're trending and where we should end up at Christmas time."

There is definitely a lot of borrowing and spending going on by Canadians and their Governments.

Enjoy the party folks, the upcoming hangover is going to be a doozy.
N matter what the story is, you can always count on the doom and gloom post on this site.
Every Xmas for retailers is always better than the last. Ya have to be a dork not to notice the trend in what yer being told every holiday season. With the Wally Mart parking lot full yesterday, one can't really say truthfully that "times are tough and people don't have any money". They got money. It's just a matter of getting it out of them. Bling bling. Then in March it's off to the landfill or it is sitting around gathering dust. Consume fer the sake of consuming.

What "upcoming" hangover charles? The one that will hit in the next 3 months, 6, months, a year, 5 years, 10 years, 20 years? Can you please be a little more specific in regards to what you are predicting and can you do so without just pasting a link that you found online somewhere?

I hate to say that you sound like a fortune teller (who through the vagueness in their "predictions" can never be wrong), but you sound like a fortune teller, LOL.
so much for the HST hurting everyone lol
Apparently the fortune tellers convention was canceled due to unforeseen circumstances.
NMG. I made a couple of posts recently on this site about this topic. The 6th,7th, and 8th paragraphs at the following link. (The first post of the day)

the mall parking lot was a zoo this afternoon. Forgot about the shopping appetite on the saturday closest to christmas.
I guess I am odd man out again this year. Since I'm paying more taxes (both open & hidden) and I have to make a $1,000 + plus bite out of my pension for the HST, I am only spending about half of what I usually do. That will still be stretch on my limited resources. Can't afford to give as much I'd like to the Sally Ann either this year. Merry Christmas to the Chamber of Commerce, The Independant Business Assoc.,Gordo's group in Lotusland and of course Dirty Dan and group at City Hall. Hopefully next year will be better if the politicos would get it together
There is the opinion of Charles, then there is the opinion of NMG.

Finally, there is what will actually happen.

Unless someone has figured out how time travel into the future works so that one can see what will happen, every single one on this earth will have to wait to see what will happen when it happens.

Till then, discussion is fun but not a single one of in this earth has a guaranteed insight.
