A Golden Opportunity...At The Library

Prince George, B.C. -  It's a golden opportunity to see a Christmas classic, "Miracle on 34th Street", for free at the Bob Harkins Branch of the Prince George Public Library later today...

The library is showing the movie in the Keith Gordon room at 1pm as part of its 'Golden Cinema Saturdays' classic film series -- it's open to all and movie-goers are welcome to bring their own snack. (logo at right courtesy of PG Public Library)

Children's Librarian, Becky Stark, was the main 'push' behind getting several new Film Series programs started at the downtown branch earlier this fall.  In addition to showing the classics, there is also a Teen Movie Monday night, Family Movie Saturdays, and a Books-to-Box Office series on Wednesdays.  So far, each series runs once per month (details are available on the library's website or by calling 250-563-9251)

Stark says she created the programs in conjunction with Teen Librarian Amy Dawley in such a way that the film series wouldn't duplicate what's already available in the community through the movie theatre and Cinema CNC.  "We wanted to reach out to those people in the community who maybe wouldn't have access to these movies," says Stark.  But she adds, "There's lots of reasons we wanted to do it -- even just to make people aware that we're not just a 'book warehouse' at the library.  We have lots of different materials: like free movies, like music, like downloadable books."

Stark says each film series seems to be attracting a core group of followers and there's beginning to be some overlap,  "I've found that some of the adults who are coming to Books-to-Box Office program have started coming to the Golden Cinema program, as well."  Also, she says, many families who come to the Saturday morning family storytime have started popping out for lunch, then coming back for the family movie.

She's encouraging anyone who comes to check out the films to bring a friend.
