Prince George, B.C. -  Police are searching for a suspect who was apparently trying to set the Queen Charlotte RCMP detachment on fire...

RCMP Senior Media Relations Officer, Corporal Dan Moskaluk, says an on-duty cell guard interrupted the apparent arson attempt, after hearing a noise in the front office of the detachment just after 9pm Friday evening.

Moskaluk says the guard caught the suspect by surprise as he was standing outside of a smashed window -- the suspect fled, but a four-litre jug of gasoline and a flare were found lying inside the detachment on the floor below the broken window. (flare shown in picture above, courtesy of BC RCMP)

Moskaluk says the on-duty RCMP officer was not in the building at the time of the incident, he was notified, but immediate patrols in the community failed to locate the suspect.

"This case is quite disturbing, considering that a fire in one of our buildings could cause injury or worse to staff or to persons lodged in cells," says the RCMP spokesperson.  "In addition, the suspect's actions could have caused a major disruption to police and ambulance service to the community as both RCMP and BCAS (BC Ambulance Service) share the building."  (photo at left shows broken window into front office of detachment, courtesy BC RCMP)

BC Ambulance Service Superintendent, Jody Holmes, says, "We are happy that no one was injured and that there was no significant damage to our station."

The suspect is described as six-feet tall...he was wearing a matching toque and sweater.  Anyone with information is asked to call the Queen Charlotte detachment at 250 559-4421 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

I think this person will not be getting too much support from his family, or friends. Obviously a desperate person seeking attention. Well, he got it. Likely will be chased all over the island.
Well done to the cell guard who acted so promptly.

I don't want to think about what might have happened had a fire started in the building. The person who broke the window and placed a 4 litre can of fuel inside sounds dangerous.

I hope he is already caught. Planning that level of firesetting is disturbing.
Obviously some one has issues. Sure hope they get counseling if they're caught. Maybe a job, too.
