Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George Astronomical Observatory will be holding a special event  this evening as the public is invited to witness the lunar eclipse tonight.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes behind the earth so that the earth blocks the sun’s rays from striking the moon. This can occur only when the  Sun Earth and Moon are in near perfect alignment with the Earth in the middle..

Unlike a solar eclipse, which can only be viewed from a certain relatively small area of the world, a lunar eclipse may be viewed from anywhere on the night side of the Earth. A lunar eclipse lasts for a few hours, whereas a total solar eclipse lasts for only a few minutes at any given place.

The Observatory will be open from 7:30 to midnight tonight to watch the event. Keep in mind, the observatory’s event will only go ahead, IF the sky is at least 50% clear. If it is raining or snowing, the event is automatically cancelled.
The forecast is for clouds, so check with the observatory before heading out. That number is 250-964-3600.

The next total lunar eclipse that will be visible in this part of the world, will happen on April 14th 2014.
