Fireworks over downtown Prince George rang in the New Year
Prince George, B.C.- Although there were some who rang in the new year with  fireworks  there were some who  opted instead to get blasted.
Despite all the warnings, there were still some people who decided to take a chance last night and try getting behind the wheel after drinking.
In Prince George, officers stopped more than 500 vehicles, and while the number of offences are low, there were still issues:
Non Moving violation

Vehicle impounds
1
Vehicle defects
1
24 hour License Suspension ( alcohol)

24 hour license suspension (drugs)
1
Vehicle impounded
1
Impaired charge
1

In all, Prince George RCMP say it was a relatively quiet New Year’s Eve.

So, what`s next, if you are even thinking of having a drink after you drive they pull your licence?
And impound your vehicle
No wonder it was quiet with all the threats. Almost think we live in a third world country. Oh ya we do don't we with Campbell and the fiberals, tip another Campbell.

Last night there were 34 or 36 teams out with Operation Red Nose. Not sure how many rides were given . Our teams did 12 rides.
It was nice to see some young people helping out in the office. A few of the girls looked to be around 10-12 years old. Most volunteers appeared to be mid 40's and up.
For us the people getting rides were in their early 20's . Nice to see them thinking. All were pleasant to deal with.
Next year they will be looking for volunteers again. Maybe you could volunteer or call for a ride if you need a lift.
Thanks to new stricter impaired laws, more common sense and great volunteers it was quiet!

Those who think they live in a thirld world country HERE should save up some money and go and visit one - it could be very educational, for some.
boomer and PG:
Great posts.
Just want to thank all the mounties ambulance and fire personnel who worked last night, oh and the ER staff. You all made it safer for us, Happy New Year.
Am I the only one having a problem connecting a total of 14 violations cited above with the issue of drinking and driving which I thought was the topic for New Year's eve festivities?

For instance, are any of the vilations compaound ones which deal with one vehicle or one driver only, such as "non moving violation" and "vehicle defects"?

What does a non moving violation have to do with drinking and driving? Was it is drinking and about to drive charge phoned in through 911, as eas suggested on this site yesterday?

Which case of an offense was the vehicle impound associated with? The defect? The drugs on board? An impaired charge?

I think we need some better reporting out by the RCMP of what they actually found.

In the final analysis I see three clear impaired/driving under the influence (alcohol or drugs) vilations, and one of those may actuall in combionation with another for all I know.

To the RCMP. Clear communications are in order!!!

Till then of 500 cars stopped, no more than 3 of the 14 dealt with the issue under scrutiny.

If there is someone out there who understands that report let me know how many drivers were charged for impaired driving.

I think we are missing the point, it doesn't matter so much as to how many charges were laid,
I do however applaud the RCMP for their efforts, the real reason for the stoppages is to deter people from driving while drunk and killing innocent people on PG roads, and if this is what they need to do to ensure that doesn't happen then I have no problem getting pulled over and being checked out.
Thanks for looking after us RCMP, I know I am glad to hug my wife each and every day she comes home as opposed to visiting her grave site because some a**hole decided to drive home drunk.
nuff said.
tim hortons was closed last night, good job rcmp
Highlander,
same with my wife, just happy she keeps coming back at all after some of the stunts I've pulled let alone getting injured or killed by fools on roads.

Gus, who cares? What really impresses me is that it would appear the message got through.
For 500 vehicles to be checked and 14, not 40 infractions, Wow, I'm happy!
When you check a vehicle, you're checking for impaired operation, but you also notice taillights out, bald tires, wrong insurance for driver or vehicle, new driver with too many passengers, the motor vehicle act and regs are rampant with offences.
But Gus, thanks, your comments are very insightful and you've helped me dig through some interesting stuff. Happy New Year.
rcmp was out in full force awesome, this is waht i want to see with u guys, not 10 cars parked at tims
the message is getting strong we will not tolerate drunks on our roads!!!!
Boomer .... thanks for the report on operation red nose.

Looks like if one projected the 12 rides your team gave that the total would be around 400. I assume that most would have had enough to drink to have been considered under the influence of alcohol. So, you must have had an influence on the statistic of 3 or so of 500 that were found driving while impaired by getting it that low. It would be nice if the police recognized such efforts.

Congratulations!!
I would like to thank all the volunteers who were working last night ... ;-)
Not sure what the #'s will be . I suspect around 200 - 250. Our team worked quite well together. We left at 8:00pm. Didn't really get busy until 11:30. There were RCMP officers volunteering as well.
The RCMP officers that we came across all thanked us for being out there. Also Victim Services has not been called out yet. Hopefully we can make it through the rest of the weekend without a death or serious accident.
Made it a sober venture, didn't see one officer on the way home?
Actually the truth is that the police were very relaxed because I know of two parties where all of the drunks who drove away never seen one roadblock! Why was there no roadblock in front of the jail? They would have caught at least two trucks and two cars with dui drivers last night, if they were set up there like they normally do. Seems the big thing now is stoned not drunk anyways. The less police presence, I guess that means, the less drunks out there (nabbed in reality). If three drunks can drive from College Heights to the Hart without seeing a roadblock, they must have taken ospika?
Anyone ever notice the great lengths we will go to in order to get drunk???

Dedicated Drivers. Taxi's, Operation Red Nose, etc; etc;

So it appears that the main thrust of New Years is to get drunk. **Interesting**

Instead of why the police - why wasn't it I took the keys from the drunks that left the parties - Oh I know its not my responsiblity.... right... Its always someone eles problem .. Why is that... It must be great to be able to shout our mouths off at the police all the time .. and whats the big deal with polie at Tim Hortons - I believe they need a coffee just like all the other people in this town As I believe if Timmies had to make a profit only on the police we wouldn't have ten of them in a town of 80,000.. Lighten up on the police guys and gals they are doing a great job for this town from what I can see
I agree, well said getagripreally.
I don't see how anyone can drive with having just one beer.
I also drove for Operation Red Nose during the holidays. The bottom line is to get folks home safely. A lot of the folks I drove were not even drunk...had maybe a drink or two. But they were being RESPONSIBLE and taking very serious note of the changes to the drinking and driving laws. Yes a lot of young folks took advantage of the service and I was very proud to see this. Volunteering for Operation Red Nose is not only a ton of fun but it's a great community service. We help prevent accidents and save lives. It's difficult to come up with a good reason not to support Operation Red Nose.
