Two contingents of Russian educators have arrived in Prince George as part of an ongoing local project sponsored, in part, by the Canadian International Development Agency.

Under contract with CIDA, the McGregor Model Forest Association is engaged in an education program with Khabarovsk, Russia.  Tour Coordinator, Bill Kennedy, says the three-year contract involves transferring various skills in three areas: woodframe housing, in business and entrepreneurial development, and in local governance.

Kennedy says of the two teams in our city, "One group is working with CNC, looking at training programs for entrepreneurs and looking at the kinds of things entrepreneurs require to be successful."

He says, "The second group is working with instructors from UNBC on local governance issues."

Mayor Colin Kinsley has called a news conference to Tuesday morning to introduce the Russian visitors.

A picturesque city, visitors to Khabarovsk are likely to enjoy walking the broad Amursky Boulevard with its many vibrant shops and perhaps visit the local market. The city's five districts stretch for 45 km along the Amur River.

Recently, there were many renovations in the city's downtown, rebuilding with historical perspective. A popular attraction for visitors is a walking tour from Lenin Square to Utes via Muravieva-Amurskii St., where visitors can find traditional Russian cuisine restaurants and shops with souvenirs. There are many night clubs and pubs in this area.

This city of 600,000 has a vibrant downtown.

Please ask the Russians for suggestions in respect to our own downtown revitalization plans, Mr. Mayor!

It is amazing to see what can be done without basic skills

wait till they know how to govern and how to run businesses ....

I wonder if we show them how to build houses out of wood frames, if they will show us how to build structures out of real stone instead of that stone veneer junk on the UNBC buildings....
