Prince George, B.C. – Residents of Prince George have finally caught up to previous numbers of flu shots given.
At this time in 2008/2009 flu season, ( the most recent “normal” flu season) 4248 people had received a flu shot. Prince George has surpassed that number as during the same period for the current flu season, 4522 have now been given the vaccine.
While there have been some confirmed cases of A/H1N1 in the province, flu activity across the province has been fairly low to date, but that doesn’t mean the threat of flu is over. Flu season is still with us, and flu shots are still available..
The bug that is making the rounds is gastro intestinal illness.
There have been cases in Terrace, Smithers, Dawson Creek, with a confirmation of Noro Virus in Dawson Creek. The threshold for which a medical health officer can declare an “outbreak” is very low. Just two cases within a short time frame can trigger an increased focus on hand-washing, restrictions on visitors to impacted facilities and the movement of staff from one facility to another.
The message from Northern Health remains the same;
• stay at home if you are not feeling well;
• do not return to work or school until you are feeling well and your symptoms have resolved (in the case of influenza, until 24 hours after you are free of fever)
• practice careful hand washing: wash your hands often, and well. Use warm water and soap, and scrub for at least 20 seconds. Always wash your hands after coughing or blowing your nose, after using the washroom, before eating or preparing food, and after helping someone who is ill (such as an ill child).
